Rain?? What's that?? The 4/10 we had the beginning of last week is gone with the wind.
Hay and grass are drying up. The crop that has germinated is just hanging on.
Lots of guys commenting on how patchy their fields, after looking down on them from the sprayer.
SF3 has cursed our area with a drought we didn't want or need.

I mentioned we are behind last year in GDD. With the heat coming in later this week we will probably be about average for GDD by the end of June for the 2 months of May and June.
It all depends when a guy was able to get the seed in the ground. Many were badly delayed because of mud.
Some numbers for reference:
Average GDD base 5 for Saskatoon area 1951-1980 May and June - 517
Average GDD for 2000-2016, May and June - 459
2016 GDD May and June - 608(way above average)
2017 GDD May 1 to June 20 - 429

When calculating GDD or CHU's and applying to a crop, Do you start adding the units from,

-- a)the date when you planted,

-- b)from when it first starts emerging or

-- c)when the last seeds emerge?

Thinking of soybeans and the CHU my variety is rated at.

How close will maturity correspond to the CHU rating? Is it worth the time to keep track?

Danny I think you start counting from when the seed was planted if it has enough moisture to germinate.

Beans are daylight sensitive when the days get shorter they mature



This means they'll almost always make it before frost.


Less heat units/gdd means less yield because they quit growing/flowering earlier
