It all depends when a guy was able to get the seed in the ground. Many were badly delayed because of mud.
      Some numbers for reference:
Average GDD base 5 for Saskatoon area 1951-1980 May and June - 517
Average GDD for 2000-2016, May and June - 459
2016 GDD May and June - 608(way above average)
      2017 GDD May 1 to June 20 - 429
And Saskatoon ALWAYS 4C warmer than in the sticks out here, BET WE are at 400 MAX, will feel like winter tomorrow!

Grass as you JUST stated was dry winter, warm, wet cold spring, hot windy for a while, now COLD wet for a while...holy shit the CLIMATE is changing!!!!! Panic! Tax me quick!

Earth to stupid guy...it always has changed, always will change and we can do SFA about it.

World is HUGE, life is short stop with the dooms day crap and live. It will be here long after us.

When calculating GDD or CHU's and applying to a crop, Do you start adding the units from,

-- a)the date when you planted,

-- b)from when it first starts emerging or

-- c)when the last seeds emerge?

Thinking of soybeans and the CHU my variety is rated at.

How close will maturity correspond to the CHU rating? Is it worth the time to keep track?

Ever notice how some people can suck the oxygen out of a room?
Guess they should tax them for that.

Danny I think you start counting from when the seed was planted if it has enough moisture to germinate.

Beans are daylight sensitive when the days get shorter they mature

This means they'll almost always make it before frost.

Less heat units/gdd means less yield because they quit growing/flowering earlier

What would happen to canola if a minor frost hit it at this time of year and stage? Maybe if the crop had to "start over" to some extent the multiple growth stages in the field would become one! See 101, there's always a positive side to every story, but then it would probably freeze before it was mature in the fall anyway.... a negative wave. I doubt it will freeze anyway....a positive wave. I'm sea-sick.

I don't think a minor frost would fizz on it.
Had a late crop one year that was flowering when it froze. Never fizzed on it. The second frost when it was podded wiped it out though.

The late emerging ones never amount to anything. Looks good just before the crop starts to turn.

Agreed 101. The late emerging ones within areas of decent crop establishment usually can't compete with whats in close proximity. But "patches" of late emerging with most at the same stage will do their thing. ...just later.

The best thing you can do for poor crop establishment is go on a fly-in fishing trip for two weeks.....
