All the wrong doing and injustices done to Khadr, that the SCoC found fault with, took place while the Liberal's were in power under the leadership of Chrétien and Martin governments that Ralph Goodale was actively involved with.
In actuality, the SCoC found no fault with how the Harper government dealt with Khadr's case and the speed it took to return him to Canada.

Khadr had one hand around trudeau's ball's, the other was around Goodale's, and Khadr was squeezing and pulling. Everyone knows what the SCoC stated in their ruling, even Khadr's lawyers. I'd say it was likely blackmail,,, trudeau, give us 10 million or we'll go to court and make it very public how I was treated under Liberal government's at the time.
trudeau likely said, we'll give you the 10 mil, and through in an extra $500,000, plus we'll give you a public apology to boot,,, just keep your ****ing mouth shut,,, in fact get things setup and we'll pay you out quick so the Americans can't get their hands on it, sound fair.

Khadr's payout is tax free, is there any reason why Khadr can't gift his lawyer's 5 or 6 million tax free as well? After all, they're practically family as he's been living with them.

"Dallaire says previous governments refused the opportunity to repatriate Khadr and he believes they should be held accountable for that."

And that's why they lost in every court. The government ****ed up, no matter how angry this makes everyone, including myself, they shouldn't have left a 15 year old Canadian in GB.

A 15 year old. Pay him and move on Canada.

If you don't count the USA military court that put him in GB, when he plead GUILTY to five charges including murder......

None of that matters, its what the Canadian government did. Exactly as Romeo said.

If all justices take minutes to decide a unanimous decision, you know you are screwed - or at least should. Innocent until proven guilty, that pesky little thing.

It has helped ensure that every new Muslim Canadian will be voting liberal next election. JT is going to make sure we get good number of these folks into Canada before next election.

There is no political benefit to making this payout to Kahdr. Muslims are too small in number and anyway they would not likely vote on this issue. If anything it will cost lots of votes. Decisions like this are often carefully scrutinized by party insiders.

The best thing from a political view is to have stalled or let the Kahdr's suit wind its way through the slow court system which would have likely cost much more in the end. But this would have taken the decision off of the Liberals and put it on the Court, most likely the supreme court in the end. But since the Supreme court had already ruled that Kahdr's rights had been violated it was a no win situation for the government whether Liberal or Conservative.

The amount of the compensation was set by precedent in the Maher Arar case.

Is it better to have paid out more than 10 million in compensation and legal fees now or 20-40 million later? Which decision is better if you are thinking in terms of taxpayers?

Regardless of how anyone sees Kahdr, the lesson is there are laws which governments have to follow.

A few generations ago many people were very anti German because of the first and second world war and the incredible loss of life and persecution of Jews and other groups. Canada had lots of German immigration post war and now it is a non-issue.

On both sides in the second world war, civilians were targeted in bombing campaigns that were designed to terrorize the population killing women, children and entire families. It has all been forgotten and pushed under the rug as that generation is mostly gone.

A few decades ago it was the problems in Northern Ireland and Britain that dominated the news.

Terror and tragedy are nothing new. Unfortunately many humans, no matter what their background or religion are quite capable of demonizing their real or perceived enemies and committing violence, atrocities and disregarding the law to suit their own view of the world.

The majority of the victims of the current problems in the middle east are Muslims who are killing each other.
