Carbon tax: on the bill for rail freight Alberta and BC each impose a carbon tax on an average car it is about 33$, or for 100 unit shipment it will be over 3000$ paid in carbon tax, multiplied over the whole crop a sizable tax drain.
Rail is most environmentally efficient method of shipping grain. Given the application of the formula on rail freight, (seriously this is the best way to ship for the environment) should carbon tax formulas be levied where:
1/ we have no other method (land locked customers)
2/ rail is the most environmentally friendly mode of transport.
Pennies per tonne, perhaps, but aggregated a decent sum: in the larger national view Federal application of this formula, should reconsider this application of an environmental tax. Surely someone in Ottawa needs to recalculate the carbon tax formula, the reason for application, and note in so doing the balance of trade from land locked Agriculture using rail to get to markets as a vital segment to our national economy.
Go figure!
