With all due repect WM, Re-read what you posted....unless that was unadulterated sarcasm....they work for themselves only. We all had a chance to lock in some production and did what we did(or didn't do)for various reasons.

101...that could very well have been the "high" price opportunity for the 17/18 marketing year. But surely good quality wheat with decent Px will recover. But WTF do I know

If any of you did the click through to the US variety trials you will see that the varieties are different than ours, but you will see that the data is head to head annual data, with several trials reporting. In in Saskatchewan we have yield averages, & protein average +/- by %. We have no individual data and no individual plots reporting so a producer can see what the varieties did in their region. In the US each variety is listed with \ protein and yields (other factors you will note are included) and each station reports data separately. A highly transparent process.

This year as many ponder their wheat protein on your farm how valuable would this data be to you as you select the pest performing variety. If Saskatchewan had USA data you would be able to see head to head data from trials.

I have lobbied for better data on varieties in Saskatchewan for a bit now, and from my conversations farmers agree. Many associations are electing directors right now, including Wheat, I urge you to ask for better data in our variety guide as a base line performance. Indeed data is not everything, but good data is necessary for base line decicion making, and in Saskatchewan this can be greatly approved.

Standardize the process, compare annual, and as in the US 2 year data and a 3 year average. If we are going to support higher royalties with UPOV 91 we have the right to know how the varieties perform in head to head testing on an annual basis. Some will say it costs too much, but WGRF has millions. Some will say the farmers may not need this data but I say we do. Ask us to pay Royalties on new and improved, give us the data to support the decisions.

Same go for pulses .
There is info on characteristics in pea varieties that has not been shared to farmers as well that plant breeders are reluctant to release . We need that as producers as well .
Some of those characteristics would shelve some new varieties fairly quick .

If 15.5 pro is $1.30 premium, sell September/October 2018 2 CWRS 15.5. Odds are protein will be higher, as everyone will hammer the N to wheat b/c they didn't like the discounts this year. Only way for the spreads to go next year is narrower. When you deliver 13.5 pro next fall, if spreads are more historical, 5 cents a half for example, you get a 20 cent discount. Don't think every company will let you do it, some may have different spreads for new crop pricing, but it's worth looking into.

Gonna be a low pro year for all of Canada I think this year.

If you need to move wheat try and work out a deal for blended protein from all you deliveries. Likely will work out better. Premiums look really good but the discount down from the base grade protein most graincos use will be even worse. Try avoiding them at all costs.

All comes down to the net price per bushel.

Interesting that protein tests higher the day they are loading trains or the 3rd party inspection guys are in house.....

Neighbor sent same sample ....one to cgc one to grainco. ...out by a full point ....can be a big deal....

Cgc isn't doing random checks to make sure grading is done properly.....why?

CGC does check to ensure grading is done properly at elevators.

If you feel your protein isn't right you can ask them to do it again or if you want you can submit it to the CGC for a grade dispute. They grade the sample and what they grade it as stands and what the elevator has to bill it as. Be it a protein or grade issue.

I have an idea were my protein should be because of taking part in the Harvest Sample Program.

If I want even more details on smaller lots I can take it to the CGC or a third party grader and get a more detailed account of what I have. Let them know YOU KNOW what you have.

Why would we even be having this discussion. And like someone else said.... there isn't much for them to pick apart this year so the flavor of the day is Px levels and the premiums and discounts.

Answer to the last question is no. Make sure you can do retirement after you quit. Why do farmers farm? A:nothing else to do. 70% of so called ag careers are those sales huckster positions that call you during harvest to book inputs for next year. That fact will sober you up quickly.

After being on this side this long there is no way I could work in the Ag Industry. One thing that fails me is how anyone born and raised on a farm could work in certain occupations in the Ag Industry.
