    Germany Votes

Cdu/CSU under Merkel will form power...less votes than last time. This would be like our conservative party.

The SPD which used to be 2nd... Like a coalition here between liberals and ndp... Relegated to the bottom.

AfD to form opposition. They are conservative Germany First anti immigrant pro freedoms

AfD didn't exist 9 years ago.

Think the AfD will wake Merkel up?

It'll be interesting who is in the coalition... The FDP which are libertarian pretty much, the greens, or AfD... She has to pick two the way it looks.

      Vote counts coming in still.

Its interesting that she has served for a long time already - 12 years. She must be quite popular to get reelected after letting in nearly a million refugees in 2015 alone.

But Germany has a long history of guest workers from Turkey. In 2011 there was some 2.5 million with a Turkish background and 700,000 had German citizenship.

That just about cost her the election and why AfD got so many votes.

Merkel has severely restricted immigration quotas since then.

The pro immigration socialist party had the lowest turnout since WWII.

          What's that tell ya Chuck?

That she is still popular even considering the refugee issue. Politics is politics. Most politicians defeat themselves and wear out their welcome. Harper, Wall come to mind.

It wasn't that many years ago the WASPS in Canada didn't like all the post war German immigration in Canada. There was a lot of resentment because of all the Canadians who died fighting Nazi's. Now Germany is our friend an ally and Germans are us. Funny how things change.

Exit polls showing the AFD getting around 13% of the vote. First time a far right party will return to the German parliament since the Nazi era.
I doubt Andrew Scheer will want to run on an anti immigrant platform.

Klause, can you explain the leanings of the different parties? I saw a graph that indicated they were all right of center. The 3 main ones that were voted in.

Contrary to NA news German politics all lean right.

The major power is trying CDU/CSU which is the party of Konrad Adenauer (the one who brought Germany back after WWII ) and Helmut Kohl (under whom German reunification happened). Generally the leaders are in for the long haul and the party is stable.

The letters stand for Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union.

Their color is black and they are most closely like our conservatives.

The FDP is a further right more libertarian party. Their natural followers are small biz owners that want lower taxes and less regulation. They are anti immigration to an extent.

The AfD is the Alternative for Deutschland. They are hard right and hard line anti immigration. They also want Germany out of the EU and not bailing other countries out.

The Left (that's the actual name) is a socio-communist party. They are what's left over from east German communism most of their support is from the poorin the east.

The SDP is the other big party. Social Democratic Party.

They are like a liberal / ndp hybrid that leans left of center slightly they stand for more social programs higher minimum wage unions etc. However interesting to note they still want controls on social programs like unemployment only if a job is not available ... Drug testing for welfare etc. Usually union employees government workers and the like vote for them.

They have formed power before... Usually do 1 or 2 terms at a time.

They've had notable accomplishments like re-integrating east Germany's economy and bringing eu countries standards up.

Before the election the government was a coalition betaeen the CDU/CSU and the SPD... SPD now said they want to be opposition and not government.

If they would have made a coalition the AfD would have been official opposition.

In Germany it's normal for coalition governments... And they are usually very stable and work well.

Oh yeah and the Greens are the favorite of university profs and other enlightened people... They are pretty moderate and pursue green energy but also taxation (as in wanting lower) issues.
