    Not to mention that all of those flat dark surfaces are made of oil, and/or required copious amounts of oil to produce them. Eliminating the internal combustion engine will not make those uses go away.

        In Maui pretty well every building has solar collectors on the roofs - both commercial buildings and private homes. Solar heats their water, but the sun shines pretty much every day and there's no snow or frost to cover the collectors. They still need diesel generators and you can see fuel trucks hauling diesel to the generator (visual assumption).
