Almost every serious slam against the CWB has been proved wrong. No one threw a party when sales were made below COP. The books were audited by DeLoitte Touche every year and we had much more info on sales then than we do now. Those particular farmers were arrested for stealing lawfully impounded vehicles from Canada Customs, the CWB act was never used or even referred to for legal purposes( they had no export permit; wheat, peas, or fence posts, it did not matter).
My next bit of proof: in the '12-'13 year protein premiums all but disappeared. Ritzy said it was because of the U.S. drought but this was not the first time that that happened. The only new thing was no CWB and no protein payment. We lost $750 million more on protein than in the worst of the previous 15 years.

I was a grain co. employee for twelve years. High protein grain was mixed with low protein grain at the port and sold at the BOTTOM of that grade agreed upon in the sale to whatever point of destination. When I say the bottom of the grade , I mean every tolerance of that grain was pushed to the max when it went on the ship. The same used to happen in the elevators also and hasn't changed too much. High protein subsidized low protein for decades, and still is.

The Grain companies /post cwb now can hide a lot of profits in the basis and you don't have to be a whiz kid to figure it out.

Grain Co's who are in the business of making money for their shareholders certainly weren't lobbying to get rid of the CWB to make less money. They also wanted control of their terminals and their full logistics of how much wheat they could bring in to planning trains, blends and vessels. The producers that wanted them gone wanted control over their own marketing. Most got their wish and how has it worked out? Would appear the minority want it back so, although maybe not perfect, what appeared to be an unnecessary and dated additional cost has been removed.

As for the comment on protein premiums disappearing we are half way through a crop year of some of the widest protein spreads seen in Canada. Protein is only worth something if it is in short supply. Again, if everyone has something it's value decreases. The CWB's job was to smooth that out when there was huge protein premiums they were held back and when there was none they still paid them. It was merely moving money from year to year, pool to pool, so everyone always got a little bit.

Love it or hate it the CWB is gone.

You can spend all day remembering it or you can go and learn how to market your grain for your own best interest.

Farmers have more options than ever to take advantage of good prices and hedge themselves against bad prices.

If your struggling or just learning, talk to your local grain buyers. Most have info nights or marketing meetings where they or consultants go over the markets and various strategies.

Larry Weber, Chuck Penner, FarmLead, Grainshark, etc all publish good materials as well.

To the people who want to pool their grain and sell collectively, good for you and good luck. Nothing is stopping you from doing so.
I want nothing to do with going back to the CWB. I will market my own grain thank you very much.
