Grassfarmer, make no mistake, MB Hutterites are land hungry. You have Tri Leaf Colony closest to you and they own land just to your southeast, even though their base is straight south of Baldur.

Not as land hungry as the AB colonies. They own land right across the road from me here actually - but have resold some of the land they bought in this area already. That wouldn't have happened in AB.

I always laugh when I hear the comment that once Hutterites buy it it will never be sold again - we're guilty of that in Scotland too Lol. Multi-generational successful farming isn't a bad thing in my opinion.

HAHA that's my way of getting even with every neighbour whoever pissed me off. Sell to the Hutts and leave the province.

No one will buy again if they move in Sorry Grass that's just what happens. Or youll pay lots more than you use to.

Now some colonies are wealthy and some are not really well off and sometimes have to sell.

          Any way have fun.

Colonies used to be diversified but most today are large grain farms with some supply management for cash flow to help service gigantic land debts. Actually a winning strategy in Canuckistan, where farming the government is everything. With livestock the main thing to make the enterprise successful is slave labor which they have. Nobody can leave a colony with their share.

AJL, still more diversified than most of the posters on here - large grain farms with no livestock. One of the local colonies here makes fire engines and another is a major roofing tin manufacturer/shed builder. Take a look at this flier - pretty impressive farm diversification!

That's my plan too, sell to the hutterites when I retire. Then I phone all the greedy neighbors and remind them why I didn't sell the land to them.

Sounds like some of you have more issues with your other neighbours than with the Hutterites!

                    Do they pay capital gains?

I am sure that they pay capital gains the same as anyone else. If they sell machinery, land, or quota for a gain they would have to pay the capital gain. However, they seldom sell land, and most people do not sell machinery for a gain.

For years the colonies operated under the corporate or religious umbrella and paid nothing to their members, so there was no individual taxes paid and everyone took advantage of the maximum amount of social assistance programs and personal government deductions, and yet each individual hutterites net worth was millions of dollars. The government tax men ruled that unfair and now takes the total hutterite net income and divides that by the number of colony members over 18 years of age and taxes them on that, but does not give them individual tax exemptions (as I understand the wp article).

Biggest problem that I see is they are running under a "corporation" type status which is an ongoing entity, but you can not leave the colony (corporation) and cash in your share. It should be like any operation where you split up your partnership or marriage you have to pay out the departing member(s), or dissolve and split the outcome.
