Around here, if you swath, you also need a swath lifter/fluffer. It is not optional. Once a big swath gets rained on, it never dries again. Everyone had or has an old combine pickup mounted on wheels to fluff the soggy settled swaths. To say nothing of snow.

Furrow....is that trade off you're talking about a swather for a straight cut header?

if you swath it is a measured risk, only cut what your willing to risk on the ground, watch the forecasts. here in s.mb we usually take cereals down first half of august, so rarely a problem drying out swaths. No rain this year, so no concerns with swathing, although the crops were so short, most of them were straight combined.

We use to swath everything in the Time Before Roundup even had these funny machines.



Swathing has lots of risks in a high rainfall area.

Wet heavy snowfall has risks on a standing crop. Seen that before were one day you have a nice field the next its flat as a pancake and your picking it off the ground.

I agree with Manitoba some years if your harvesting in August you usually don't get rain on crops but once September hits all bets off.

Swathing is a last resort thing on our farm. Besides the obvious efficiency, our wheat will from now on be treated with Manipulator and the shorter plants aren't suited for swathing.

Did you see a yield increase from the manipulator as well?

Jay-Mo, can't say about extra yield with Manipulator as it went on every acre of wheat. We grow all Plentiful and it has weak legs, so we just did it all.

We used Etherel last year and saw an extra 7 bus/acre. I attribute this to the treated area all standing; no lodging. Etherel treated straw seemed harder to put through the combine than Manipulator tho.

Started to swath Canola today. Big difference from yesterday’s open up and try out the Massey’s too today.

Most neighbours started today.

I know we got cold two nights ago but it didn’t freeze on any station.

Or does he plant just one day think we’re done and boom 💥 colour change.

Heard of one combine fire near Richardson yesterday. Newer red one apparently went up in flames doing lentils.

Our one RM issued a fire ban and advised all residents when combining to have a water truck near and some disc hooked to a spare tractor just in case.

Its a good thing just in case it happens.
