Maybe the shitty harvest is driving everyone to drink. Shortage of rye whiskey.

Has anyone grown that new hybrid rye? Seed grower callled me said it’s very high yielding .... of course!! Best thing it doesn’t volunteer very much being it’s a hybrid. Yeah good one, the hybrid canolas don’t either.
Cost of Rye seed is priced like canola, maybe a bit cheaper. Pretty costly far as I’m concerned. Not sure how much fert rye takes?

Seed Grower neighbors grew it 2 years ago. 120 lbs n got 100 bu. per acre lots of rain on it, sprouted feed.

the price of rye is where it is because so little was planted. If much went into the ground last year the prices would be poor. Its really a specialized market now it seems.

The rep mentioned to me it was $65/acre seeded at the base # of seeds/square foot.
Claimed they don’t sell seed by $/bushel but by the seed.
Proximity to Belle Plaine sounds like a factor to growing.

Winter kill Issue is still a concern.

Doesn’t sound like a low input crop considering the chance of winter kill/risk. IMO the seed cost will limit acres.

Your exactly right!! I don’t need to worry all winter how much I will loose to winter kill at $65 ac.
I planted a high input crop before this, don’t need another one after it.

i agree, i gave up on winter wheat long ago, too much winterkill. spring varieties yield almost as much or even better now. Ducks unlimited cant be happy.

The best option for us farmers is a hardier variety that can withstand frost better but not hybrid so a guy can clean his own seed.

The hybrid seed option is the best option for the seed companies.
