On what basis are you making the claim that Trudeau has stopped exports? Here are the actual export numbers for the products you say he has stopped exports of.

And you have to go back to 1991 for a year with higher wheat exports than last year. Trudeau does not set world price and farmers in Canada are continuing to grow and export at ever higher levels in spite of prices.

As far as pulses go, India increased pulse tariffs before Trudeaus debacle trip. Second, the tariffs India set apply to all countries and not just Canada. Third, the tariffs were not set to punish global producer of pulses but to increase domestic prices in India. So to blame Trudeau for India domestic policy is wrong.

I am not a fan of Trudeau and do not think he is a good prime minister, but I am an even bigger critic of alternative facts and propaganda. So unless you can back up your claims with some facts I call BS.

1. Notley ordered the 350,000 bbl/day cut in order to reduce supply to match export capacity. Her move pushed WCS prices from a low of around $12 back up close to $40. I think we can agree getting $40 is better than $12 even if you have to leave some in the ground.
Yes, if we had more pipe in the ground the cut would not have been necessary. So is the lack of pipe Trudeau's fault? Couple of things to consider. Transmountain first sought expansion in 2012. In 2015 the NEB stopped the process because of shoddy work by the government at the time and Transmountain in their analysis. In 2016, NEB approval was granted, Notley gave approval, and Trudeau gave federal approval for both the Transmountain expansion and Line 3.
It was the new BC government in 2017 that put a stop to the expansion, along with enviornmentalists and natives. They are the true villains in this story. Trudeau, in order to try to get it back on stream even bought the existing line and expansion project.

Should he have done more? Faster? What? Maybe, but remember Keystone XL was started in 2010, 2 years earlier and is still stalled. Trump overturned all rulings and ordered it to proceed but in just 2 months ago (nov 2018) a Montana judge ordered it stopped so it is back in the courts, just like Transmountain is. And I have a hunch that Transmountain will get going before XL does.

2. First and foremost, I disagree with the giving of the Saudis the remains of the CWB. That was not Trudeau by any means. Second, it was a cabinet minister who made the statement that Saudi's stopped buying wheat, not Trudeau. We can debate whether he should retaliate by stopping oil or sales of arms but that is after the fact, not the cause.

3. Agreed fully he looked like an idiot in India. But even the brightest light likely would not have changed Indian domestic policy on pulse imports considering Indian farmers make up 40% or more of electorate and they demanded higher prices for their pulses which resulted in world wide tariffs. Furthermore, the tariffs are permitted under current WTO and in fact the lentil tariff was only raised to 40% and is allowed to go to 100%. If it was Trudeaus fault and India was out to stop Canadian pulses, they would have raised the tariff much more or simply stopped buying Canadian as the Saudi's did.

4. Canada is being used as the sacrificial pawn by both US and China in the current trade wars. I am not sure if Trudeau is not smart enough to realize this or if Canada is simply too small of a fish to matter to either party. It is a no win situation. When stuck in the middle of a pissing match between two giant bullies, and each important to us, no matter what you do you to support one side, the other side will take offense.

Yes maybe exports will go down in 6 months, or we might have a world wide drought, grain prices skyrocket, and let the good times roll.

Bucket, I consider you a smart guy and appreciate what you say most times. But Instead of the sky is falling Trudeau bs how about stating real facts, look at trends, hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst. Lets give this some perspective. Harpers had 3 major pipelines on tap approved and ready to go. Trudeau killed Northern Gateway with legislation, killed energy east by pandering and killed TMX by obstructionism. What happens in the US with XL is out of our hands but mostly Obamas fault for stalling the original project for what like 8 years.


Here is how you deal with protestors. You evoke the notwithstanding clause an bring out the army and bulldozers like trump did. Or you cut off entitlements to people who block wealth creation for the country. To deal with foreign tarrifs and bullies, you enact legislation to hit right back at them. You ban Saudi crude, you halt Indian visas and work permits and you restrict capital from China.

And to get help with all this, you stop being a dick to our greatest trading partner no matter who is in office. Think trump is going to help us now after the stupidity Freeland and her gang did. Not a chance, we are on our own.

Canada is an extremely weak, spineless country with our loyalties in the wrong places.
