This SNC deal is icing on the cake, i hope this whole damn country sees it by now. It doesn't seem to matter which party it is, or what level, right from local to provincial to federal. It's there. Nobody wants to call a spade a spade but it's corruption. Taking money from corps or individuals for preferential treatment. What's it gonna take for these dipshits to get the message it isn't ok? All I see is a bunch of narcissistic bastards that are worried about where they are gonna get the money to buy the votes to get re-elected. Im about ready to vote for more of the above in the belief that's what it's gonna take to get this remedied. We are not living in a democracy, that died a long time ago. Look at the campaign contributions on election Canada website, nobody donates to a single party anymore, they donate to both, the percentage might change by election given the odds of the party being elected. Only an idiot would donate to only 1. Hedge your bets and cover both bases because if you need preferred treatment above the law, if you didn't pay your SOL. Ive been told today's conditions, politically, are exactly the same as post WW2. Don't expect a hero to come along anytime soon, turn on the tv and and the Salem witch hunt would look mild in comparison, there'll only be idiots that are easily manipulated like Bush jr. and Justin coming along, sponsered by the biggest check. This is the reality in Canada today. Being in the "majority" means your the one footing the bill for every fringe group out there that's easily swayed to "vote for me" I'll make everyone pay that ever did you wrong.

The narrative around this event is that it is the exception and not the rule in Canada. Whereas, as you point out, it is just exposing what is rampant and business as usual, more acceptable in a certain province, but happening everywhere.

One of the best posts in a long time. But what do we do?? The two main parties federal and provincial feel we have to vote for one or the other. That way we re screwed before we start. If it were possible to get enough independent candidates or a complete new party it’s long over due we sent a message. And the contribution thing has to change. What the hell do these parties need millions of dollars for?

Corruption and conflict of interests occur at all levels of government including rural municipal governments in Saskatchewan. So maybe the problem is there are some ordinary people who are also greedy and corrupt given the right circumstances?

Unfortunately corporations have a lot of power because of oversized economic influence. If SNC goes down or struggles then a lot of jobs are lost. No Conservative or Liberal government wants that to happen.

Has Andrew Scheer stood up and said SNC should be prosecuted and if convicted be not allowed to bid for government contracts for 10 years which is the law? If he does he risks a lot of potential votes in Quebec.

The US and the UK both have a system for corporations to avoid prosecution with out of court settlements in cases similar to this.

I am not saying this is right but what are the alternatives when our competitors offer this loophole?

Poor Justin is getting squeezed from both sides now, I just read Quebec's Premier Legault is pressing Ottawa to settle with SNC - Lavalin quickly as many jobs ( VOTES ) are on the line in Quebec. Legault said if this drags on Lavalin will be further weakened and vulnerable to a foreign takeover. Justin is getting a little strong arm thrown at him, maybe he knows how Jodie feels now. Our PM is getting backed into a place he's probably never been before in his life . . . . . a corner, he probably won't handle it well.

2 - we need to consult with the indigenous leaders

3 - we need to consider the impact on the (Quebec) economy

(Oh wait, we threw the Canadian economy under the bus over India (wining and dining terrorists) and China (Huawei)

4 - we need to protect the environment

But that's precisely the point of this crooked deal legislation that SNC pushed so hard for. Everyone is talking about all the jobs that might be lost but if you're a senior exec in SNC and you are worried that you might be sharing an 8x10 with a boyfriend named Bubba, do you seriously think you give 2 shits about jobs? The only reason these crooked deals exist is so the suit and tie crowd can pay a fine and avoid the prison showers. Nobody will go to jail.

SNC could go broke tonight and 80% of the engineers would still have jobs at the end of next week. They're consulting engineers ferchrisakes. The real value of the corporation is contained between the ears of the engineers. The day that SNC files for bankruptcy the phones will be ringing to snap up the good ones. If they've got legitimate projects that they are managing they'll never miss a paycheque. If they're crooked bagmen paying off goons in Nigeria or Libya they have reason to worry but they should have reason to worry. Unfortunately corruption is a job qualification in Quebec.

Love this story. fckn quebec had no concerns about 100,000 alberta oil jobs but will do anything to protect a few thousand quebec jobs. Heard their premier talking about the importance of maintaining multinational head offices in quebec as they dont have many of them. Hello?? your PQ separtist party cased them all away 40-50 years ago. This story is fantastic.
