Where do those numbers come from?

Well a lot of manipulation I suppose but the message around it is more concerning. Its telling the east that they can kneecap western Canada and still keep a functioning economy. That's scary.

Kenny has got to get in there and halt those equalization payments. They have distorted everything.

Don't forget the environment exemption for that large Quebec cement plant and other large emitters while the average family picks up the fake environment costs...

Equalization is a federal program paid for with federal taxes collected in all provinces.

No province can halt equalization payments because it is a federal program.

Equalization is in the Constitution and will not be cancelled unless all provinces agree to it.

Harper tinkered with the formula but accepted the basic policy goal of equalization.

"Thank you for good cattle prices"

Odd situation where the daughters going to the feedlot are worth more than the mothers as bred cows.

Not many bidders on the Cows. Too much work for too little money.

I will accept your explanation BUT does it make it right for western provinces to run deficits for the benefit of balanced budgets in Quebec????

bucket you let him off the hook way too fast. he is 100% wrong. Equalization is a federal program, but resources are a provincial jurisdiction. If Quebec can exempt its hydro revenues, we can exempt our fossil fuels and other resources.

A nice little referendum on this ought to open up the discussion. I see a constitutional challenge to get that formula rewritten or the stepping stone to pull out of this dysfunction. This wasn't tried under harper because he wanted to grow support in that province. Well that will never work except for a handful of seats. Now its time the west really takes the fight on.

If I was Justin Trudeau I would be very thankful for people like you Chuck2. Here is a couple of numbers if your Trudeau to be thankful for, Statscan numbers from 2016. Albertan's sent $49 billion in tax revenue to the federal government and recieved $27.2 billion back. Quebecers sent $50.3 billion of tax revenue and recieved $66.4 billion back from the federal government. So as an Albertan I am thankful that I get f#+ked by Eastern Canada on a daily basis and that fellow westerners like Chuck2 think that it is just fine! Enjoy your day!

No pasture....guys are still worried about water....

It's really a matter of perspective....

Good prices for my steers and poor prices for bred cows is a win...

My kid has put all his money from coyotes into cows......Coyotes are a good price as well...

This is the same reason that Sask was able to mount a constitutional challenge to the carbon tax. The feds have powers to tax personal income and consumption that arrives from it (ie GST) but they cannot tax the means of production directly. So if carbon is a result of an action to extract a resource, then its taxation is illegal. That's why they are trying to frame it as regulation not tax when its clearly a tax.

The same argument can be made for equalization.
