We all know he can’t make our oil less expensive to extract and refine. We all know he can’t kill the carbon tax, because the feds will just slap one on us anyway. We all know he can’t win the battle in court against a federal carbon tax. We all know he can’t “cut off oil to BC” because he can’t dictate who private companies sell to. We all know he can’t bring back the 6 digit jobs in the oil fields. The boom is over. And it’s never coming back."

Wrong wrong wrong.

Lets tackle it. The restricted price of oil is directly related to the lack of tidewater access - pipelines. There is easily another $10 a bbl there if we have other customers. Pipelines being held up by bogus court and consultation procedures. Constitutions guarantees provincial rights to move resources to market. So a constitutional challenge would be inline next. Same thing with the carbon tax. Equalization will lead to a referendum and if rejected it will lead to separation.

Lived there for 15 years - how about you?

Long enough to live through the BSE debacle which gives some insight into how Alberta politics works. After the border was closed we were looking for alternate destinations for our beef and cattle. There was a clear need to send beef off this continent to circumvent the American packer monopoly that was screwing us over. Extensive attempts were made to establish rancher owned or controlled slaughter capacity to facilitate this to no avail. The PC Government in the 80s paid Cargill and IBP to move to Alberta and set up the two mega plants we have today - turns out they were also given an assurance there would be no competition to their monopoly. So while these foreign outfits were paid to entice them to move here and have regularly been subsidized since, the same PC Government fought tooth and nail to ensure Alberta and Canadian ranchers were not able to go into business against them.
Truth is the AB Government was bought and paid for decades ago by big business and foreign interests. That's one of my biggest regrets with the NDP Government - even they weren't able to break that habit. You can be sure if Kenney gets elected the decisions taken that effect everyday Albertans will not be taken in the Legislature building in Edmonton but in Corporate boardrooms.
