Well, the first week of May is done and I wouldn't say its been perfect growing conditions. To those who say seed early, it doesn't matter. Well, explain something if it's been in cold ground that freezes solid every few days since April 11 the and still not up. Ah, it's great to be at 55% done but oh you might be reseeding.
Anyway the Crop report for our area.
Most farmers waited for north of the Valley because the ground was cold and nothing was growing. Funny even the go-getters are waiting.
We will hit the 25% mark by tonight now that the rain has been taken out of the forecast. Some are further ahead and some are just starting.
Lots of moisture at the moment but with windy spring days and now opening up the ground with seeding it could drop off fast. We did get to the 1 inch in April in 4 or 5 showers and some snow.
Fire bans are off again and guys are lighting up the sky. Lots of land reclamation happening. One guy is pushing bush and then disking and protill before the drills. Actually made the farm really nice in quick order.
We worked most last fall with the kelly and the real wet ones just knocked the cattails down. Well, try seeding into that mess. So out came the big boy to do the job. Actually worked and was able to seed. But still, you can get stuck. Yea it isn't spring till someone sinks a drill.
Out of all our land, I would say was able to go on almost half end to end now. Yes the stuff north of us was only that way in 1988. But those low areas actually gave us a great crop that year. ( oh for the young guns that were one of the driest next to the dirty thirties in Sask) No global warming or whatever bullshit. Cut down a tree read the rings big is wet close together is dry as heck. Farming is cycles and we are in a dryer one.
Some are spraying but with -10 and -2.5 and -5 nights not sure why. If it gets warmer like they say next week all hell will break out. But hey it will be the middle of May, which the 16th is the optimum day to seed in our area for a great crop. Wish we could have it all seeded on that day.
So to wrap things up no measurable rain in may so far, moisture is good but will need some after seeding. Farmers are burning and cleaning up land to get back lost acres from flood years. No drop in prices of seed or chemical or fert. Let that soak in your getting taken to the cleaners and all you have to do is pay pay pay Mr. Stupid farmer.
Optimism is high for those who think this is just a short term blip. The ones who have been around the block a few times and seen the really bad years say wow thank god I'm not leveraged like back then I wouldn't want to live that again.
Oh on politics I just have one thing to say How could Canada have any single person left who would even think for one nanosecond to vote for Justin Trudeau and the liberals. Oh like little Willy said were all just uneducated who can't see the liberal program is working.
Sask People Stay off my land or just ask permission to go on it. Its mine I paid for it I don't go and piss in your back yard or have a wiener roast in Regina or Saskatoon. So respect that its mine and all will be fine.
One guy hit a power pole and kept on seeding so guys just be very careful out there its just a crop and by the look of things you will come out a winner this year if you break even.
