    Lentils

Holy crap, when canola dropped a buck a bushel that wasn't the signal to put half the country into lentils. That market is iffy too. There are land rollers running around every which direction. Hope some of these acres are chicks or something.

Lower inputs. Much less fert and seed costs.
Canola production costs are out of touch with the current market reality.
If no one else is willing to give a bit, some farmers are willing to give it up.

The BTO to the NE of you and not Monette has only seeded one quarter of lentils. He has tons of acres of chicks in. My brother knows him quite well and that’s what he was told. I was shocked to hear that. Be nice if every BTO did that lol.
How do chicks do on heavy gumbo?

Chick pea costs could be crazy too, depends how many times they need to be sprayed.
What are seed costs? $60-75/ ac? I honestly don't know

I tried some about 10 yrs ago and they were ok. Not sure about this strategy. Lots of us learned some hard lessons with pulses and wet ground. Lentils put a BTO out of business back about a decade ago when he had thousands of acres pounded into the gumbo in some big rains and rotted there. The tight soils really hold on to these root diseases too and humid mornings don't help. Pulses pretty much have to be on a min 4 yr rotation here, maybe longer.

I am wondering if guys are think they will just pop the whole place into pulses for a yr until canola is back to $11.

Lots of lentils mostly due to high nitrogen prices and getting ****d buying canola seed.

Maybe they can put a rush on that pulse protien plant, or is it never going to see the light of day just like AGTs big pasta plant.

Yes $60+ per acre for seed is ridiculous.

Just a bit over an extra bushel an acre to pay for the luxury.
