Well, what a good week of howling winds, sunny, cold, hot and freezing and? What is missing is rain, Yes the rain hater could use a drink soon or June. But the pattern in place has little rain north of the 49 and unbelievable rain south of the 49.
So here is the crop report for the week that's been.
We are at 86% as of today and with a chance of rain on Friday might finish by Sunday or Monday if things work out.
The wheat is all in the ground and even the last seeded is poking its head out. Good subsoil moisture but the surface dries out fast. Real fast. So this is a year and screws up with pressure or packing etc will show up. Most others in the area are in the same boat. Early seeded wheat and later are almost at the same stage. Early though has issues with up down or crop emerging and crop that has been up for two weeks. Could be interesting come fall or it will work out even.
Barley is in and starting to poke out it is a crop I am worried about if Drews forecast for cool Sunday and Tuesday mornings come to be. We had Barley years back frozen off that we had to reseed. Only once but it sucks.
Peas are having a few issues as the ground is cool and they are slow to push out. Lentils are the same in our area. Lots and lots of peas were seeded. Lentils are way up also.
Flax that is seeded the odd field is poking its head out and looking at the sun. Yes, some seed flax early in our area.
Durum acreage will be up but like by a couple of quarters in the area, no back to the 80s cropping.
Canola we don't start seeding canola till the 16th and like clockwork that is the day, drill number one quits whatever it is seeding and focuses on Canola. Drill two finishes the crop then joins for canola. Lots of early seeded canola is up or breaking ground and Sunday and Tuesday mornings will be watched. ReSeed plant 19 could be a facebook post. We are all wall to wall Liberty this year dropping RR Canola from rotation. We have BASF liberty, Bayer Dekalb Liberty and Pioneer Liberty plus pod shatter. Will see if any are better than the original.
Oats are being seeded by a few that are almost done.
The average guy south of the valley is done or wrapping up. North of the valley, a few big dogs with more men than a small town has been done or finishing. Rest should be done by weekend or Monday.
Spraying was almost a nonessential part of the program for spring 2019. No growth or min. We sprayed lighter RR and only did a few fields with express that will be wheat also tried the Olympus for foxtail.
Some early seeded fields that were a mess last fall and the burnoff was missed have weeds that cant is sprayed crop and yield will be affected.
Now I understand burning sloughs and cleaning up land etc are a part of farming. But the weather has turned dry and its time to put the matches away. Both urban and rural. We had a fire a few days ago north of us that everyone thought burned out got a few stubble wheat fields and into the Res. Well, the wind likes to change directions and it did yesterday and boom it started to move south. Burning everything in its way. I have a couple of sections of wheat stubble that touched and fire guards were made to hopefully stop it. Grid road helped and it jumped and turned.
But please hold off the fires till we get rain.
Pastures need help fast and guys are worried.
So to wrap things up most are done or finishing up by Sunday/Monday. The crop is coming up but We have a very dry month of may and moisture is going to be an issue from here on if June does not have a few shots here or there.

Canola is a prime example the crushers are low and offering deals wink wink to get you to sell, guys don't have the bushels that are reported in bins. One report had most of 2018 canola still in the bin that is a joke thanks CBC. Canadian bullshit Corporation.
