    Spraying....

Hard to justify going out there. Weather conditions aren't good. There were some pretty cool nights recently. Now hot, dry and windy. Are crops and weeds "actively" growing? Pretty darn slow here.

There is a need to do it but....

    Is anyone not going to?

Is anyone going a cheaper route?

Hard to get excited about throwing alot of money at this crop right now.

I have a feeling there is the odd pocket here and there that is doing just fine. Saw a line of intense cells on the radar the other day. An inch of rain out of one of those would be like winning a small lottery.

There is not a lot of weed pressure here right now but there always are some and not spraying would leave a messy field by harvest. That is here where there is some moisture. I think with the low weed pressure it would be a good time to use some older cheaper chem's and leave the high priced fancy new ones at the dealers.
Just working on the old song and dance of getting everyone's prices which frustrates me a little.

Driest year I remember. In my 27 year career. It is absolutely wonderful. Crops are coming along, weeds don’t exist relative to usual, too dry at the surface to germinate.

Regarding spraying. I have slowly been learning that a few weeds do not justify spraying all the time. Last year is skipped spraying some oats and had no issues, and was one of my cleanest stubbles this spring.

I am watching closely. If the rain comes this weekend it will need spraying for the flush of weeds that will emerge. If it doesn’t rain, no point, as there will be very very few weeds.

Everything was sprayed post seeding and just before crop pokage. Makes for a great start.

Hay isn’t great, but looks ok so far. Doesn’t matter much I have lots of oats to hay if need be. Pasture as well, needs rain, it I seeded rye on Saturday, lots of moisture there, so will have excellent grazing in a month.

Friend of mine at quill lake caught a freak inch last night. And he needed it bad. Glad for him and his pasture and newly seeded alfalfa!

My flax has some weed pressure. Guess the authority didnt work. Cant spray it yet though, plants are just barely out of the ground. Everything hinges on this predicted rain.

I wouldn’t use any expensive sprays on this drought stressed crop until a rain. My experience from 1988 is that wild oat /millet spray called Hoe Grass didn’t work. I was going after the millet. The plants need to be actively growing. The only spray that worked that year was 2-4-D.

Spraying peas at night right now... if I tried during the day I'd imagine the viper would cook everything.

Cereals are close, but reevaluating options. I have my "go to" mix, but might try to leave it alone until just before flag. If we get a shower there'll be a later flush. Think I have to go after grassy's as Millet is going bananas, but it might be getting half rate puma rather than the Cadillac, wild oats be damned.

I haven't given up on a crop the first week of June yet...
