    Crop establishment....

    Peas are good.

    Wheat is good.

    Flax is good.

All three of the above survived the frost well.

Canola is so-so, not really up before the frost. Slow going.

Yellow Mustard is really hard to look at:
1: it was up when it froze.
    2: flea beetles ravaged it.
3: hot dry winds desiccated it after the previous two punishments.
Sprayed with Matador but lots of damage was already done. the crop "looked" decent before the frost with little to no beetle damage... and it was all down hill from there. This all happened within days. If it would rain enough, I wonder if it would be worth dragging the drill across it and reseeding it. Mustard is a short season crop.
Edge was put down and lots of fertilizer for a good mustard crop.

    Wheat good

Peas good even coming back in the burnt area. From the growing point

Barley is a little weaker than wheat but filling in.

    Flax so so.

One field of canola on light ground is up and in rows but it got a shower day after seeding to south of us a way.

Our canola coming but I seed a little deeper.

    Shallow seeded real bad

Packing and new style drills are showing better results.

    We need a rain

Was just going to comment on the direct seeding thing.... I initially thought you were making reference to independent shank drills. All I can say is the Bourg was an improvement for us but far from guaranteed fool proof.....I must be lower than a fool if people think independent shank drills are bullet proof because it simply doesn't guarantee shit no matter how much attention I pay to detail.

Then there is soil.....not everyone has silky soft vagina soil like SF3! High clay based soil can over pack and bake, sandy soil dries out. Some ground types are harsher than others.

But it is surprising how moisture can somewhat equalize, or at least lessen, the differences.

Cereals mostly came up. Canola patchy, some dying now. No moisture left in the root zone.

The 3 or 4 tenths forecast for the weekend should provide relief for 2 days

              Wheat good and even
              Peas good and even
Canola patchy from wet clay land and seed row dry down. Doesn't seem to matter what kind of drill but direct seeding is kind of to blame. If you get some dry dirt on top the seed and pack it stays moist in the seed row. Packing wet clay will never work good without a bit of rain to help you out.

                  Cereals good.
                  Peas good but short.
Canola so so depending on drill and field finish before seeding. Shallow stuff didn't come. Stalling a little now from dry I'd say.
