I seed with a disk drill ...never have I seen it dry down to the depth of cut of the disk....

Very attractive how? Ok crop insurance on the annual crop we grow for feed. Joke pasture insurance and cattle price insurance where you are basically betting against the house and you know who usually wins those at the casino. I'm Ok with fending for myself I'm not after Government handouts, just contrasting our position as ranchers with grain growers.

Well, on the cow/calf and feeder side you have WLPIP. They have programs to ensure you can set a price floor for your animals, a great tool if potential markets are compromised. You do not even have to sell a single calf to capitalise on this program.

On the feed side, you can insure your forage production with MASC, I simply googled Manitoba forage insurance and found all kind of information. It appears they will insure total production as well as feed quality. On the same page, I found they also offer pasture insurance.

As you stated, you can also insure a variety of green feed crops, corn and silage alternatives for production/quality.

As you can see; There are options available to you, just like any other producer wishing to mitigate their risk.

Not sure if you guys noticed the trees that havent got branches yet and the ones that dumped their seeds like a month early. The trees dont know what to do anymore. No rain, freeze one night, 32deg the next day so they just gave up dumped seed and guess look to next yr. Ominous signs.

A good rain won't make a hay crop....You could throw lots of money at cattle guys ....here is the problem...

There won't be a hay crop....and the pastures are disappearing quickly....no amount of money can buy hay or pasture....the solution shouldn't be to sell the herd....

We are talking about finding solutions for both the cattle guys and the grain farmer....

It might take grain guys dedicating acres for the cattle guys...and the government making the payment...

So what do you do with the guys who never took any of the government programs which already exist?. Should they receive the same consideration as those who have been paying Crop insurance premiums all along. Dont think so. I dont have enough cows anymore to matter but the livestock producers are the worst hit when drought hits and require the program if any ASAP.Most cow calf guys and gals spend years building their herd and blood line and selling your cows isnt a one year consideration. I had a brother in law in Alberta in 2002 when there was significant drought. He told me he saw 20 bushel canola crops written off there so it could be cut and baled for feed. Trucking costs kill you for feed so maybe that makes more sense. Just saying.
