The costs to raise cattle are virtually unchanged in the past decades. hard to compare that with grain farming. No program can keep up with the costs in that side of the business.

Ok. So for those of you who need support so badly, in what form do you hope the government comes through?

        Be specific please.

This isn't about who has a better insurance program....look you guys....this is nothing to be bickering about anymore...

A good rain won't make a hay crop....You could throw lots of money at cattle guys ....here is the problem...

There won't be a hay crop....and the pastures are disappearing quickly....no amount of money can buy hay or pasture....the solution shouldn't be to sell the herd....

this province is better than that...

This mindless dribble about insurance is nonsense...

We are talking about finding solutions for both the cattle guys and the grain farmer....

It might take grain guys dedicating acres for the cattle guys...and the government making the payment...

There is no sense in ruining two industries in this province for no good reason...

This weekends rain is make or break....calls will be starting to be made for a good auction date for into next spring....

          It is that serious....

I seed with a disk drill ...never have I seen it dry down to the depth of cut of the disk....

The seed was put into moisture and two days later its bone dry around the seed....I gauge problems differently ....these are serious problems....

I'm Ok with fending for myself I'm not after Government handouts, just contrasting our position as ranchers with grain growers.
Well, on the cow/calf and feeder side you have WLPIP. They have programs to ensure you can set a price floor for your animals, a great tool if potential markets are compromised. You do not even have to sell a single calf to capitalise on this program.

On the feed side, you can insure your forage production with MASC, I simply googled Manitoba forage insurance and found all kind of information. It appears they will insure total production as well as feed quality. On the same page, I found they also offer pasture insurance.

As you stated, you can also insure a variety of green feed crops, corn and silage alternatives for production/quality.

As you can see; There are options available to you, just like any other producer wishing to mitigate their risk.

we need all these youngins to take the reins soon
we will be ok , but i haven't forgot the 80's and how helpless it can make you feel
for most of them it , it isn't their fault they got caught up in this perfect storm/disaster with a careless, unconcerned idiot at the controls that feeds on unicorn piss and fairy dust, and couldn't give a shit about western canadian farmers and who doesn't have a god damn clue what ag does for canada. ralph goodale , you should know better . make no mistake this lack of compassion and concern for the west will follow you right into the history books. this is huge and you are saskatchewan's representative , don't you ever forget it.
and maybe some of you leaches living off of us could just back to f#$k off a little, show a little compassion ?
do you really need $860 for a bag of canola so you can have a bunch of people driving around in new trucks?
do you really need $17/bu for wheat that probably will get phased out in 2 years ????? can't believe any of you dreamers think there is room for a seed tax ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???
and do you really need $800 k for a tractor or combine or $500k for a sprayer ??????????????????????????????
you see you all went too far and when you see a hardworking young farmer have to throw in the towel , understand , you are part of his demise . and don't any of you ever forget it
its damn well shameful how greedy all you leach/pricks have been

Not sure if you guys noticed the trees that havent got branches yet and the ones that dumped their seeds like a month early. The trees dont know what to do anymore. No rain, freeze one night, 32deg the next day so they just gave up dumped seed and guess look to next yr. Ominous signs.

A stampede out the door will KILL all the value in iron/bins while grain/cattle increase! Yikes, hope that never happens!

So what do you do with the guys who never took any of the government programs which already exist?. Should they receive the same consideration as those who have been paying Crop insurance premiums all along. Dont think so. I dont have enough cows anymore to matter but the livestock producers are the worst hit when drought hits and require the program if any ASAP.Most cow calf guys and gals spend years building their herd and blood line and selling your cows isnt a one year consideration. I had a brother in law in Alberta in 2002 when there was significant drought. He told me he saw 20 bushel canola crops written off there so it could be cut and baled for feed. Trucking costs kill you for feed so maybe that makes more sense. Just saying.

Neighbor also uses a disc drill. His shallow seeded mustard on chemfallow was moving in the wind last night...
