OTTAWA (Reuters) - China's customs agency plans to increase inspections of Canadian meat and meat product imports, a move that could seriously damage the Canadian industry, officials said on Tuesday.
A Canadian agriculture ministry notice to industry seen by Reuters said the embassy in Beijing had been told the Chinese would open all containers of Canadian meat and meat products and in some cases 100% of the contents will be inspected.
China, locked in a major diplomatic and trade dispute with Ottawa, has already blocked imports of Canadian canola seed and temporarily suspended import permits from two pork plants.
Chinese officials cited "recent cases of non-compliance of pork shipments" and also said the move was linked to the risk of African swine fever and anti-smuggling measures, the ministry said in its notice. China's pork industry has been badly hit by a deadly outbreak of swine fever.
The Canadian Meat Council, which represents major processors, urged members to "increase significantly the surveillance and compliance with all requirements" for exports to China.
"We cannot stress enough that the slightest ‘non-compliance’ could jeopardize our entire meat exports to China, which would have a disastrous effect on all CMC members," it said in a message to members seen by Reuters.

The costs to raise cattle are virtually unchanged in the past decades. hard to compare that with grain farming.

Clear you don't have a clue what you are talking about - used to be $30 hay bales now they can be $130 or more. Pasture rental that used to be 70c/day can be $1.60 in places.

You ever bought fertilizer or canola seed grass? Priced a combine lately? Go try that and get back to me.

You don't think ranchers buy fertilizer jazz? or seed $100/acre corn? - some of the cover crop mixes are $65-80/acre and we use machinery too. The biggest difference I see is that ranching is a consistently low/negative margin business - we never get years where we make hundreds of dollars an acre.

That said it's a choice we make, no one forces us to either ranch or to farm and no-one owes us a living.

Unfortunate that this part of my post detracted from the other - how can ag producers expect to be taken seriously by Government when they claim to be suffering from unusually severe weather conditions and at the same time insist that the extreme weather conditions are just normal weather conditions because that fits their climate change denial theories?

Stats Can and the USDA have a cheap food policy. They constantly over report stocks depressing our prices when we should be reaping the benefits of low supply and high prices. Oh they 'correct' their numbers a year after our bins are already empty and say that yeah there really was a shortage. Assholes. They depress our prices when times should be good they can damn well make it up to us when times are bad.

When govt is running deficits, suppressing interest rates,
collecting all the taxes, plus taking on debt that it has zero intention of paying back, plus there's the quantitative easing going on, diminishing the value of the dollar, YEAH THEY SHOULD STEP UP. It's like quadruple dipping into our pockets at the very least. They want to fix the climate by collecting taxes, it's their problem now, you don't just get the gravy and wash your hands of the dirty work. How da fawk does a guy build a bank account to ride out the tough times when your getting raked everytime you turn around? If the above sounds like capitalism, oh i forgot about the oligarchy in grain, fert, chem, seed, rail, that's kept in place by govt regulation, all to export grain overseas which they are screwing up more then they are helping at the moment.... this is wasted breathe but that's how i see it. Maybe they should teach us how to code....
