How big of job is that Mallee and how many people involve? Looks like a lot of animals!

Never been around ewes much and just curious why you’d dock the tails? They are great fly swatters for the cows and effective “cranks” to help move the stubborn ones down the alley. Do you use rubber bands or ??? It’d be interesting to see your handling set up too.

Crazy questions from a “Moo Man” from up North.

Difference between hair and wool woodland - sheep are not self cleaning - when they get crap all around their backsides they get flies then maggots. Shorter tails keep them cleaner.
We used to knife cut them at this age then switched to banding them as day olds when we started lambing everything inside. I'm guessing Mallee has one of those fancy production line slide things to tail on like the Kiwis do?

ps 408 ewes 384 lambs cracking resuly seeeing last year was possibly worst feed year ever and ewes were on falling plane of condition at mating

ps lamb is between 8.50/9 per kilo and anything older still around 6 to 7 not bad for old stock. carcase weight not live

Like how you call it tailing. What method do you use? One thing about our hair sheep is no tailing needed.

This is the system I was thinking of. Have a few Kiwi friends that use them. Works pretty slick with the cut and cauterize system for tails.

Interesting as I’ve never seen a setup like that before.

What the heck? you're using a Russian roulette version of the Kiwi slide but what's with the old sheep shears and the blood? what are you cutting with them?

It will be phased out trying to breed sheep that dont need mulesing, long process but can be done. Probably last year for us were just gonna tail strip which is alittle bit of sking removed from side of tail. But then you have to rely on chemicals on the sheep to keep flies at bay.

We shear twice a year which is another strategy
