My neighbor got away with a DUI. He flipped a vehicle then got a ride home. The "Good Samaritan" who drove him home called the cops. The cops show up at his place and he smells of booze, he likely had more when he got home! Cops couldn't do anything, no proof he was driving drunk....neighbor said he had a couple drinks when he got home. I know he has a problem. But one finally caught up with him when he had a slow speed light fender bender at an intersection of two highways.

The punishable charges below .08 are meant to be deterrents. If you think those are inconvenient, they pale in comparison to a 08 conviction. Very very very inconvenient and expensive. No insurance, mandatory suspensions, blow boxes ( pay for install and maintenance and can't be moved from vehicle to vehicle without paying to have it moved), higher insurance, fines, restrictions, criminal record.

This better be well thought out by law makers or it will be a heyday for lawyers and overtax the justice system.

If you want to see the sincerity of govt, look at an issue that infringes on their revenue stream, smoking is bad, no denial, but will they outright ban it? Hell no. Why not? Because it feeds the beast. It's all about self interest. They'll never be preventative only reactive.

Nobody in Aust had issue when BAC was lowered.

0.05 to 0.08 heavy fine over 0.08 loss of licence think minimum 12 months or moves afoot to make it that way. Was always 0.08 until maybe 10 maybe 12 years ago.

Nobody has any issues.

Usually drink low alc beer 2.5% or mid 3.5%.

Changes to laws really have hit country bars though guessing same your way just dont risk DD and loss of licence would make life to hard as a farmer.

To me its still too vague. How impaired would you have to be that two hours before driving you wouldn't be sober enough to drive if you never drank two hours before driving. You could be so pissed that two hours isn't enough time to be sober enough to drive.

Same with two hours after driving....I guess you couldn't quickly pound back a couple of doubles as soon as you stopped driving?

This is a little ridiculous. Is this really that much of a problem?

I would never downplay the seriousness of impaired driving.....and maybe people shouldn't get away with it like in my previous post....but this could get ugly

I fully appreciate the intent of this law. If I have been drinking and driving, have a hit and run, someone reports my vehicle and license plate. I sneak home and line up a bunch of empties on the table, so that when the police show up I can claim that I drank them all since I got home and was sober when I drove home. Police would be helpless to prove me wrong without a law of this sort.

As much as I despise government infringing any further into my private life, I am OK with this law, and really do not see a situation where it would be abused. It sounds really bad as presented, but can anyone suggest a better method of preventing the situation I described above? It obviously must be happening, or the law wouldn't have been necessary. When I was younger, it seemed that getting away with drinking and driving was a sport and a badge of honour, so I can certainly see a need for this.

Of course, I don't drink and never did drink and drive, so I am biased.

It seems like a step closer to zero tolerance...... then why not just take the giant step in that direction and get it over with?

AF5, 35 years ago, how many police sent drunk drivers on their way if they were stopped and said they were going home. The whole culture of drinking and driving has changed dramatically, rightly and justifiably so! I cringe when I remember our behavior. And yes I was caught! Just so thankful I never harmed anyone.

Nobody is endorsing drinking and driving but being able to compell you to provide blood or urine at a road stop, the police station or at your door is a step too far. This probably all has to do with detection of dope and its probably difficult to test for on a roadside stop.

What you forget to account for that as part of Trudeaus policies like this, he cracks down on the other side. A lot of his policies come with carrot and stick like that.

re drug driving etc .

When BAC was lowered no real dramas.

But when drug driving saliva test came in all hell broke loose.

Three things tested dope ampfetamines presume thats ice?? etc and one other cant think what it is.

A recent blitz on a long weekend in city think was a even split of offences between grog and drugs.

Message aint getting through.

Guess mines building sites etc etc in canada are tested each morning all workers?

Zero blood tolerance in transport industry.

If it came to zero for every driver i would live with it.

Think studies show speed fatigue and drugs/booze in that order are killers in oz.

And sadly a fair % of accidents occur on country roads but not country drivers not exactly sure of stats but could be 60% country 40% city.

Speed limits all over the shop in cities here gotta have your wits about you you can go from 80 km outskirts to 60 to 50 to 40 in the space of about 3 kms in parts of our capital city and yep ive been done just keeping up with traffic snap camera.

Another time about 2 yrs ago a sunday in the country a "slow down for roadworkers ahead" so slowed 60kmh not a road workers in site speed limit was 25 kms cruised through at about 70 kms stuff me dead police down the road about a km with camera could have /should have lost my license being 40 kms over speed limit, was in me ute few dogs on the back had a yack with the copper he let me go but warned me.Think he liked me dogs lol

What is so frustrating is they can crack down on drunk driving without these blatant violations. Double or Triple all the penalties for above .08 or .05.
