I think he choice of opener needs to match the packer type and width.

The last two drills I bought, I was dumb enough to buy them new so I could configure them to what I thought best suited the Ghetto. 10 inch spacing, 4 inch round packer, 2 inch Dutch spread tip. Bourgault QDA... because if I wanted to change depth I would because it's easy and I'm too lazy to change every shank every time I thought we needed to adjust the depth.

That configuration would probably be even better with liquid nitrogen fert side banded, phos with the seed and the midrow banders forgotten about. I truely believe the fert is a little too far from the seedrow in dry years and the midrow banders might contribute to drying out the seed bed a bit too.

Now if Bourgault would combine the QDA with XTC opener and make all the depth adjustments through the QDA frame they would really have something. But it was explained to me that the frame height needed to stay constant and the opener needed to be adjusted for depth...probably changing frame height ****s with the geometry of the XTC opener operation.

The only point i am trying to make is that i dont think these new miracle drills pack enough and theyre a lot of money !
      What do others think ?
The seed hawkers around here were thinking they over packed things...

Regardless, the hawk canola crops are pretty much terrible except for a guy that seeds his canola at 3.5mph and plays with packing pressure regularly.

Looks like Furrow has found the answer for his farm but everyone has different soil that they have to deal with. Its really hard to compare drills that run in different areas.
Leave my farm and travel north a few miles and across a river and all of a sudden perfect germ and it doesn't matter what drill they used. The land gets a lot lighter as you go north and on a dry spring that will really show up.
It is just hard to pack wet cay and hold moisture long enough to get the seed germinated. In the old days we would pre work fields so we would have some dry dirt on top the wet clay and that will seal better.

Another interesting thing that happened here this spring is that fields that were protilled in fall were way worse for cutworms

Actually it's a positive way.we didn't get screwed by paying big bucks to get the same yield or less.
The chicken hawk drill next fence line over has never had a better crop than us..

It does affect us. It pushes the technology with limited upside and then the simpler equipment gets discontinued or unsupported. If any company does still make a simpler drill, those things are now priced at 30% of the independent opener, so that's still $100K or higher for older technology.

Same thing as sprayers. We use a pull type which is dead simple and was cheap but to replace that now would be the same price that HCs used to sell for a decade ago. It still just some fiberglass and a simple iron frame.

The ever increasing equip costs have to stop or it will just be Monette farming the entire province.
