I've never heard of cattle being badly injured by hail in Canada - although i've heard of it being bad in Texas and Nebraska - like cows skin opened and bleeding. I guess that might depend on sharpness as well as size? The golf ball hail we had last year left a few calves stiff the next day like the muscles on their backs were maybe bruised - cows showed no signs. It did kill both lambs and chickens at my neighbours place so I guess it's size relative - lambs had cracked skulls. On that basis it maybe needs baseball size to hurt cows but I'd rather not find out.

What’s the big deal about hail? Fully insurable and in fact we call it the lottery since you always seem to have more yield compared to the adjustment. No doubt having trees stripped sucks but even property damage is all covered. Outside of the few areas with very exoensive hail premiums there is no reason not top up straight hail coverage as you see your crop value go up. On top of all that you can put it on up to 12 hours in advance of any storms coming

We have , hail insurance never covers the loss of a crop 90% of the time . Not everyone carries hail either
But whatever, I guess it’s not a big deal

I'll say it again.....Insurance is meant to limit losses, not be profitable.
Then there is the stress and mental anguish which no money can compensate for.
Dealing with dick adjusters. Stressing about what to do with damaged crop. Worrying about paying bills when insurance doesn't cover the crop loss.

Me thinks there are more than one non farmer industry reps making comments here on Agriville disguised as farmers.
It’s bizarre some of the comments that get posted. Obviously from some who have never lost a crop to drought or hail or drowned out crops . Money is real when it comes out of your own pocket and not a monthly pay check . But that seems to be the general attitude in the ag industry the past few years . A lot think farmers have it all and are so protected blah blah blah
Reality is so far from that .
Ilta is a great example. How many Ag industry people can absorb a 25-50% hit in their income like that and be left virtually unprotected. It’s astonishing the ignorance at times

F$&k me , lost 2 weeks
Thought thats what hail ins was for
So what if it comes back , got hailed FFS

Sure wish we had been "fully insurable" last year when we got badly hailed - when you have decent pasture for your cattle then 20 minutes later it's gone. Barely grew anything for the rest of the season it was so dry. No way to insure against that as far as I know, it's just tough luck. Find and pay for somewhere else to graze the cattle and start looking for feed in a horrendously expensive market.
