Snow on standing crop and a 1010 wobble box?

Well our 30% chance of flurries had us wake up to an inch or two of snow on the ground. Thanks to pathetic case iH wobble box design, I have been struggling to get the crop off.

I have standing wheat and oats. A far bit of the snow did fall through, but there is a lot still on the crop that will not fall through.

I think it would still combine, but the only time I combined with snow on the crop was with a pull type, so no engine heat to melt it on the way through.

Question is, anyone have experience with combining with snow on standing crop? If it was swathed it would be game over. But I feel there is still hope maybe?

Let me know any experiences you may have. And if anyone has a greasable wobble box from a 1010 30 foot header, let me know, I would either buy it, steal a shaft I need for the short term, or what have you?

I have about 40 ac of standing canola out, doubt I will get another chance at it. Plan is to put it to swath for spring.

Did you get your wobble box issue solved. They can be a pain once they get some wear and cutter bar isn't perfect anymore.

My attempts as combining with snow have been disappointing. It needs to be cold and the snow needs to be fluffy. We always seem to get just warm enough to melt most, but what remains freezes into chunks of ice, which cannot be separated from the grain. Otherwise, it usually goes through quite well if cold enough.

If you want to combine crop with snow, the colder the better. Most of the melting snow internally is from the engine heat being pulled into cleaning fan. Keep engine bay door(s) open and possibly hoard in area around radiator to deflect heat away from cleaning fan intake.

The greaseable wobble box wasn’t all that bad of a price from Hergott’s with exchange. Mind you that was a few years back.

Has to be cold, otherwise sieves ice up
Dont even piss around with that wobble box
Rebuilding seldom works
Combine world sells one made in italy , its good and half the price of mother case
Depends on weather if swathing or standing is better?
Swather will shake some snow out
If its winter , swathed might be better , if not standing will dry quicker even if its half flat

I had standing wheat one fall late that had a wet snow. Tried one cold night and the chunks of ice were a problem. Left it for a week or so and the ice eventually melted out and combined decent. Weather has to be on your side and so far this fall it hasn’t been.

Sorry to hear that you have issues with your 1010 wobble box. I had a 1010 header but with the enclosed wobble box and never a issue. Is it possible for you to replace yours with a enclosed one? I know combine world do have them available but you may not want to spend that much. As far as combining crop with snow on it colder the better. Dad helped a neighbor combine flax years ago when it was around minus 25c.

Thanks for the ideas and comments. A new hergott open box is 2900. A new sch pro drive which is two hundred times the system is 1900 US dollars. It comes with frame adapter, so just bolt it right on. Leaning that route, but do I spend a couple grand if there are zero combine days to come?

No, the enclosed box will not fit old style mounts by a long shot. Combine world has no open boxes just enclosed. Great ton coulle and all the wreckers have none on hand. Found a 110 header with oil bath box for about same price as a ciih box alone, but it is many hours away. There is a tiny shaft I found that is broken in the box, which is the issue I feel, but there are none in Canada, and so four days from delivery. I am finding that finding parts is fracking brutal. I guess fifteen twenty year old machinery is beyond carrying parts for? Ridiculous.

The exacerbating issue I forgot to mention is the brutal green volunteer flax in the oats and wheat. Cutting is nasty, especially at night. 4 mph yesterday while the sun was out. Sub 1 mph at night, because of the flax. Two hours of daylight is just not enough, especially when repairs are constant.

I have left enough crop out in the past. That is my biggest fear. I need to avoid it as best I can, hence the snow questions.

Be nice to catch a weather break here and there. I do know it sure makes me sick and I really look forward to when it doesn’t matter so much when the sheep are 100 % family living sustaining!

I have a late model 1010 with the oil bath wobble box...

It still fails...

RME parts and service techs told me dont phuck with them if they fail, just go with a new one.

Bought a new one to get us going that day, then tore the old one apart in the off season. All that failed was a brass bushing, which subsequently took out a stub shaft. $100 worth of bushings and seals and I have a backup oiled up and ready to go for pennies on the dollar. If we weren't literally a thousand miles away, I'd say come grab my backup and get atter.

Production disasters in sheep enlighten me? Not familia with raising sheep in western Canada you mean weather predators?
