Handling system is expanding and that is good in most ways however it is expanding mostly by non Canadian companies who need to be watched that they are following our rules and work for the best interest of Canada and producers. They can break rules costing farmers money not only up front but in the long run that costs can be hidden and passed back to farmers.

Things Like grade loss at port and dumurage it is important that farmers have a watch dog in place that will make them follow the rules of the law and enforce penalties when they over step boundaries.

In the past it was the CGC but it has been undermined and seems to be powerless or at least not willing to do the job.

"I would hesitate to guess the family's Friday afternoon tea party is getting a little more somber as international competition within Canada is heating up. Saudis are loaded with cash, looking to diverify their econonomy and food supplies. "

I wouldn't worry about the families they have been in the business for over 100 years, and are expanding as well. P+H building at Dugald, Patterson new oat plant in Wpg, and the Richardson's business knowledge is second to none. Look how they out played the other handling companies during the elevator swaps several years ago.

These families here in Manitoba know how to out last the best so don't ever count them out. In fact I'm glad they have their head offices in Wpg,.They do a hell of lot of good for Manitoba's diversified economy.

If Ritz Cracker and Closet Boy had one ounce of business knowledge as the Families do,the CWB wouldn't have been given away to the Saudis for nothing.

The competition for our grain is amazingly good in central Alberta. When there is a decent crop volume... and blending capacity... the new concrete and loop track loaders are being forced to bid up our prices... if growers actually are willing to market their grain. Yes MARKET... when there is 7 different grain co's plus feeders scrambling to get our grain supplies... all within a hour of our farm... now that BNSF/CN/CP rail is competing effectively here as well [South/US as well westcoast Vancouver and Rupert]... the grain marketing options have radically expanded... MBgrower is bang on!

Being closer to port has it advantages for sure Tom ....bit of a no brainer....but with loop tracks and new build why do they have to be build within a few minutes of the competition????

Why not make it so farmers don't have to drive so far and grab the outlier farmers instead of giving them choice after a hour drive....

Tried to explain this the other day...save me an hours drive and I will take a lower price....less fuel and tires and more loads ...value...some grainco's executive don't get it....

The sooner its on a train the better for graincos and farmers...
