but seriously , does an EV charge at all while driving , or could they ? i'm not really upon this stuff at all?
There is regenerative braking, meaning it takes the back emf from the motors which then become generators and charge the battery when stopping. This provides extremely powerful braking - without scrubbing pads on the wheels converting to heat. Endurance racing uses this for like the 24 hours lemans using a hybrid design so the brakes never really wear out, gas electric for accelerating.

To add a propeller etc to generate power has efficiency less then 1, so it just wastes power.

caseih, don't worry, chuck and friends are currently working on a legal challenge to have the laws of physics declared unconstitutional, then you can just put a fan on top, alternators on the wheels, and solar panels in front of the headlights, and your electric car can not only charge itself indefinitely, but when you plug in at night you can sell your power back to the grid.

Because as we all know, those pesky laws of thermodynamics are the only thing stopping the green energy panacea from becoming reality.

How about a big enough charging system run off the electric motor
Does it take more power to run it than it makes ?
Guess that gets back to the hunt for perpetual motion?
Just dont understand this stuff very good , but really find it interesting

Hybrid technlogy is almost 15 yrs old and its had almost no market penetration, why? Has a much simpler electric generation set up, backed by liquid fuel, and only a few thousand dollars more, easily could have doubled car mileages. And you can putz around town for 30km a day under plug in power without ever starting the gas motor up. Sounds perfect, but nope.

This is the kind of logic envirowhackos employ. ignore perfectly reasonable and working technologies but instead put all efforts into killing an industry and then hoping for a unicorn to save them.

            To paraphrase,

the first rule of thermodynamics: You will never get more energy out than you put in( ie. break even is the best possible scenario)

2nd rule: You can't even hope to break even. You will always get less back than what you put in.

Yes! Once more manufacturers come on stream with electric cars costs will come down and the net operation costs will distinctly be an advantage for electric. The Model Y Tesla has much higher silicon in their battery anode with graphite giving it a much higher current density. Seems they must have figured out the silicon expansion issues. Model Y looks to be quite the vehicle.

Reading this discussion kind of reminds me of the horse and motor car races of old. Pretty neat to read this 25 years from now.

Thanks to all, enjoying the destroying of CC wishes/ wants, dreams! The whole ball of wax, Climate Bullshit, Solar, wind TRILLIONS in $costs should have NEVER started. Earth and life would be much simpler/cheaper, less ruined kids and dreams...JUST LIVE and be happy!

Really good video by Jalopnik. Highly recommended, they took apart completely a tesla, chevy bolt, and bmw i3. Compare the designs and explain sooo much.

There has always been lots of resistance, opposition and skepticism to major technological change. Especially change to a massive industry like oil that has lots to lose.

I still don't know why we are using smart phones instead of the party line I grew up with? LOL

When cabs on tractors first came out we thought they were too noisy and hot. Better to be outdoors in the breeze. hahaha.

GPS and auto steer? Who needs it I can drive straighter than any computer!

I don't know how and why we left the damp cold caves of our ancestors?

Don't worry, climate radicals will have us right back in there singing campfire songs.

Any of you actually driven an electric car? They are very nice to drive. City commuting on an electric motorcycle makes a lot of sense, they are super fast - and quiet.
