Completely different than you guys but opinions still taken by me and pondered over.
Currently for new season meaning dec 2020 has been as high as $315 on farm for wheat and $255 for feed barley.
A lot can happen in the world and grain markets.
Historically that’s a fair spread here either barley underpriced or wheat overpriced.
Futures may rally say 100 cents doesnt mean rises here from these lofty levels basis weakens, can end uses keep paying, economic dark clouds ahead should we take these prices.
When I talk take these prices I’m talking 25 to 30% of expected historical average production.
Canola not a huge part of my programme and risky 500 kg per ha this year but costs low farmer kept seed 80 kg per ha fert simazine chem and one grass spray. Anyway canola forwads $555 I believe again converted back to on farm.
Put in context I’ve potentially had best barley average ever a high of........have to work it out , 84 bushels I think down to around 60 wheat way lower frost 30 to 40 bushels. But context 40 kms to my north 10 to 15 bushels about same to my east almost zero I was in transition zone between good and bad. To my south 30 kms possibly best ever year in history. My rainfall for year will sit at 267 mm against average of 350 mm.
Livestock side thing just haven’t been better good prices for wool and meat, wool came back 15% but maybe a good thing prefer a extra year or two at slightly Lowe prices rather than boom bust
Feed first time in many years we’ll into summer good paddock feed , hay, straw and ample grain reserves.
Shitloads of lupins my preferred stock feed.
Only downside was poor lambing % had 92% usually around the 115 to 120. Drought induced perhaps didn’t conceive but far out some guys down to 30% mothers just left lambs during drought.
That’s a bit of a wrap from me for 2019 as it draws to a close. Feel free to add yours.
Oh some family stuff all my kids fully employed , one on farm, have cracking 15 months old granddaughter, my mom doing great guns in here 89 th year.
Only negative highly likely will have to have my “good†hip eplaced had bad one done about 7 yrs ago so I know what’s ahead.
More oppressive heat in a few days 44 plus another 2 months to go yet.
Cheers to all my friends and hopefully not to many foes on here
A quick edit why was my year good , hard for you guys to fathom, but during growing season which is mid May to sept or even October, we had 3 rainfall events over 25 mm over two days rarely happens soil got wet and stayed wet. For some of you 25mm is a passing shower
