    Subsidizing Climate Change

If this doesn't get your goat, Ontario residents, so woke vote for rapid change to other technologies, govts run up the bill so far they get a backlash from the public, then they proceed to artificially lower the costs to buy votes, adding it to the deficit and then servicing that deficit from fossil fuel equalization revenue from the west. The west is actually propping up liberal govts who hate them.

Same thing will happen to NF when their Muskrat Falls project gets a bail out and they go onto equalization.

MB will get saved directly when Sask actually buys some of their expensive excess power. So we are bailing them out in a sense too.

Muskrat Falls: A story of unchecked oilmen and their boondoggle hydro project

5 reasons why the Lower Churchill Project went so horribly wrong

      https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/muskrat-boondoggle-reasons-1.5088786 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/muskrat-boondoggle-reasons-1.5088786

      1. Nalcor's oilmen left unchecked

A 2007 energy plan shepherded by then-premier Danny Williams identified development of the Lower Churchill as a "cornerstone public policy action."

Nalcor was created to lead the effort, and former CEO Ed Martin assembled a team of men with pedigrees primarily in the oil and gas sector, leading to a culture clash with the hydro experts at Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, a Nalcor subsidiary.
Tom Marshall was Newfoundland and Labrador finance minister when the financing for Muskrat Falls was finalized in late 2013, but testified earlier this month he was not aware the cost estimate for the project had grown by $300 million. (Terry Roberts/CBC)

It's now clear Nalcor's team was given an unrestricted leash by its political masters, including what amounts to a blank cheque from the public treasury, to build the generating station at Muskrat and the transmission lines to Churchill Falls and Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula.

A parade of government witnesses have testified that they trusted the experts at Nalcor, prompting inquiry co-counsel Barry Learmonth to say government leaders were naive and blindly accepting of everything put before them.

We've heard evidence of reports being sanitized to downplay the risks of the project, of risk assessments being removed from the scope of work of at least one reviewer, and of growing frustration among bureaucrats, with one government lawyer describing Nalcor as a fiefdom and the project as a runaway train.

The Public Utilities Board, after intense public backlash, was eventually asked to review the project, but with limited terms of reference and outdated information supplied by Nalcor. The PUB was unable to draw any conclusions.

And in one of the more surreal moments at the inquiry, we learned about the confusion at the very top levels of government in late 2013 as the financing arrangement for the project was formalized.
Kathy Dunderdale was Newfoundland and Labrador's premier when the project was sanctioned in 2012, and when a federal loan guarantee was finalized a year later. (Terry Roberts/CBC)

Muskrat had been sanctioned at a cost of $6.2 billion a year earlier, but the price had grown by $300 million by the time the federal loan guarantee was concluded. But some top cabinet ministers from that era, including then-finance minister Tom Marshall, have testified they were not told of the increase, though there is documentation showing some bureaucrats were in the loop.

Then-premier Kathy Dunderdale testified she "must have known" about the higher number, and believes she was told by Martin, though she couldn't recall a specific meeting or who was in the room.
The Muskrat Falls power station and other infrastructure is seen in a recent photo provided by Nalcor Energy. As of the end of December, the power generation portion of the project had reached 92 per cent completion. (Nalcor)

There are no briefing documents or notes to clear up the confusion, since note-taking was discouraged because there was a fear of leaks, Dunderdale testified.

And while the federal government was receiving regular reports from an "independent engineer" with sometimes troubling warnings about the project, the provincial government had no such arm's-length scrutiny, and was not demanding access to the federal reports.

It's hard to argue the assertion by Learmonth that government oversight of Nalcor was "weak, feeble and limited."

strangely enough the article didn't have a single mention of the dalton mcguinty gas plant scandal...how in the world could the author have missed that I wonder...so much for a reality check. more like rewriting history.

It hasn't helped the government that a series of controversial decisions, such as cancelling two gas-fired power plants for political reasons and privatizing Hydro One, have intersected with electricity policy and attracted blame for the high prices. While the cancellation of the plants has driven up rates, it's a relatively small part of the overall increase; the Hydro One privatization, meanwhile, has not yet had an effect.

                  nice try

Show me where the words "dalton mcguiinty gas plant scandal" are mentioned...I'll wait.

Thanks for confirming the media bias yet again.

Chuck does it matter whether it is Conservative or Liberal, it is still government! The majority of Ontario's bad decisions were made by the Liberals.

A couple of interesting points in the article. In Ontario nuclear is 34.7% of the installed capacity but supplies 61.6% of power used. Wind 9.4% of installed capacity but supplies only 4.4% of the power. Solar is 4.2% of installed capacity and it supplies only .01% of the power. All very interesting stats.

Also interesting that German and Dainish citizens pay twice as much as Ontario for power. These two countries are always held up as successful examples of renewable energy. This article certainly shows what a waste of money renewable energy is and how it pushes up the cost of electricity!!!!

Hamloc I didn't know you were into sweeping generalizations. I thought only A5 was prone to this failure of intellectual capacity!

Did you forget that Quebec and Manitoba have some of the cheapest renewable electricity in North America with their large hydro resources?

Did you not read the posts from Bloomberg and the International Energy Agency analysis and forecasts on renewables?

Prices are higher for electricity in Boston, New York, Chicago, and Detrot as well. Can't blame renewables for that can we! LOL

Germany and Denmark have always had higher electricity prices than Canadians before renewables became a factor. So try comparing apples to apples. You don't think there might be other factors at play?

It’s all in the UN 2030 documents .... along with getting rid of private land ownership...... through climate catastrophism .... let that sink in as Canada is headfirst up the UN’s ass.
As most farmers are landowners ... this should be of grave concern , and is the number one reason I oppose this whole UN agenda starting with carbon tax because it’s just the beginning of the UN wealth distribution plan. Land and private property is next on the agenda.

According to Wikipedia in 2015 42.1% of Denmark's electricity came from wind generation. You continue to use projections of how cheap wind and solar are but your projections don't agree with examples of existing installations. As for hydroelectric generation I have never said it wasn't a viable method of electrical generation but you need the water resources combined with the right topography.
