I built my house in 1990 with lots of Insulation and Good Vapour barrier, Air Exchange, South Facing Windows So LOTS of FREE Solar heat. Natural Gas Bill $410 PER Year.

No way, unless you are also wearing sweaters and like the thermostat at 68deg and burning wood in a fireplace every night.

The service charges alone (ex actual gas consumption) would be that in year on an average bill like mine in the city.

Thermostat at 68-69 during day and 59 at nite (if I wanted to be overheated in bed I’d stay at a hotel)
Strange thing is seeing Newly built houses with predominantly North or West facing windows when they could have South Exposure with a Longer Roof overhang
Most days furnace shuts off when comes in thru South windows

Southern Sask and Southern Alberta have some of the BEST Solar Gain in the world. Lots of sun and cool temps mean panels are more efficient.
I realize some Farmers don’t believe in Solar energy - which is the strangest of oxymorons- unless you live in your dark basement and tend to mushrooms

Pickup truck is used for Only when a truck is NEEDED, mostly drive small suv that gets 40mpg for parts etc

bullshit again , if you are in Sask , meter charge alone is $35 /month, 12 x 35 =$420
now i realize theoretically , you don't pay carbon tax (haha) on the other charges but you are saying your yearly heating bill is $410 which is impossible
and daughter has south facing windows , great in jan , but AC will run constant in july, aug to keep you from being "overheated"

My house has a big south facing window too, gets some solar gain but not enough to offets 5deg in daytime heating and 10 deg at night. Those are uncomfortable levels of living unless you are supplementing with wood or a bottle of JD.

And yes that big window comes back to haunt us in the summer.

Mustardman our house built in 93 well protected by trees and well insulated, plus 2 shops just over 4000 sq. feet total. For month of February 2019 still had a $30 a tonne carbon tax in Alberta then. We used 81.3 gigajoules of natural gas which had $123.35 carbon tax on it. We keep our house at 21* C and because we have cattle tractors are in and out of both shops daily and yes monthly service charges alone would be over $300 a year.

Now tell us how you dried or aerated your grain this year without a carbon tax.

Also if your grain travels on the railway or have it custom hauled, that freight is all subject to a carbon tax.

People on here don't get it...

Out house is similar... Longer and narrower with all glass in the South. 10' ceilings with a 12' porch so no summer sun.

Inside dividing wall is made of concrete for thermal mass.

Straw gassifier heats both homes, two garages, farm shop, and our commercial shop, and provides all hot water.

Thermostat set at 72 daytime 65 nighttime... I hate being cold.


Our power is mb hydro. Though we are looking at panels to reduce our power and fuel usage...

Another option is retrofit our boiler system and install a steam turbine.

0 fossil fuel bill.

Power bill about $12,000 a year (for everything).

If we got solar, we would get some electric golf carts and retrofit a few older pickups to electric for local use.
