    Quiet talks brokered by a government desperate to stop a growing economic threat led to two rail rivals coming together with a workaround to bypass the Tyendinaga blockade site.

    Since last week, Canada's two largest railways — CN and Canadian Pacific — have been quietly sharing their rail lines to transport essential supplies to communities in need, according to multiple government, CN and industry sources.

    But as a result of what multiple government sources are describing as a very "rare" collaboration between the two rail giants, CN trains have been circumventing blockades using alternate routes — some through the U.S. — to continue deliveries to Quebec and Maritime communities facing shortages of essential goods such as propane, chemicals for water treatment facilities and animal feed.

    Transport Canada and Transport Minister Marc Garneau's office approached the two companies and helped to negotiate the rail-sharing deal — which is still active in parts of the country dealing with blockades.

      It’s all about media spin and back room phone calls. Yes most things we discuss could work. It’s just a gov that doesn’t want to unless it’s pushed

              Inter switching limits were expanded a few years ago in the year the trains didn’t work at all.

              Joint running rights is a confiscation of someone’s property; a dangerous precedent. An even wider circle of interswitching limits would allow access to each other’s lines without usurping property rights.

                Roads and airports are owned, shared and subsidized by taxpayers for the good of all.

                Which is more important, the property rights of rail roads that act as a duopoly or a strong efficient transportation system that benefits the entire economy?

                  Shareholders never purchased roads. Risk wasn't taken on. It's easy to see why some thought farmers didn't have property rights when it came to the CWB.

                    CN and CP were given the land....as far as being purchased thats questionable....

                    Riverhurst irrigation district has a 75 million dollar infrastructure that they supposedly own....but are still having the bills paid for by the government and the purchase price of the 75 million dollar asset.....one dollar...

                    Much the same as the railways....

                      The Rwys were given land to build railbed on and other land as well. Not much different than some mega projects nowadays. I'm sure there was a lot at stake including staking dominion over the West with Manifest Destiny hanging over North America. But you can't change the past. Railways are here. They don't work worth a shit and should be under more commercial rules than they are, but it doesn't take way from what exists as private property rights that need to be respected.

                      Besides, given the truly uncompetitive nature of both railways, does anyone think in their wildest dreams that the ability to run on someone else's track would make these companies more efficient? They don't run on their own tracks (blockades or not) so why would they jump to run on someone else's?

                      Put railways in a commercial system, bulldoze blockades, and arrest people that disobey court orders.
