Is this a trial balloon for the seed tax or am I just getting twitchy?

Maybe they will put it on three varieties and then when all farmers avoid those varieties like they are treated with coronavirus they will point to that as the reason it needs to be retroactively applied to all wheat varieties? I wouldn't put it past the slimy bastards.

Ironic that Triffid flax was multiplied and distributed by a company called Value Added Seeds. Oh boy

Single biggest issue is who should pay when an episode like triffid flax happens again....

I know who paid the last time....and those responsible were rewarded by the reconstituted contract....

Or what happens when a variety doesn't perform like the advertising....a vehicle you can trade off with some value .....shitty seed ...not so much...

Canterra CEO was complaining all winter about farmers not paying enough for seed....now they’re charging a seed tax.

                  What a class act.

I am getting Dizzy... the spin is ... as usual ...

"On Feb. 25, 2020 at the Prairie Grain Development Committee (PGDC) meetings in Winnipeg, the Canadian Plant Technology Agency (CPTA) and the Canadian Seed Trade Association (CSTA) announced two initiatives that will help Canadian crops remain competitive.

CPTA has launched a pilot program to test how the Seed Variety Use Agreement (SVUA) will work in the real world.

To provide transparency on the pilot program and create opportunities for collaboration, CSTA has formed a working group with producer and industry representation. These combined efforts are an opportunity for industry to show leadership and establish how the SVUA will provide value for farmers, industry and the agriculture sector at large. The grain industry broadly agrees that seed value creation is important for Canadian crops to remain competitive globally, and that industry must show leadership.

The seed industry has been working hard to determine the next steps after hearing feedback during the value creation consultations. The pilot program and working group are the best approach to get the information required on how the SVUA will work, giving farmers more confidence and providing an opportunity to address concerns. The principles created by producer groups are also a key guideline to keep these efforts on track.

“It has been a 12-year journey to get to this point on value creation, and I’m thrilled that we are taking the next steps to make the Seed Variety Use Agreement a reality,” said Todd Hyra, western business manager for SeCan. “I’m excited about the opportunity the pilot program offers to provide evidence of value, transparency and choice for all.”

CPTA’s pilot program will introduce an SVUA system for a limited number of seed varieties sold for planting beginning in spring 2020. Limagrain Cereals Research Canada’s first registered wheat varieties — CS Accelerate and CS Daybreak sold by Canterra Seeds — will be included, as well as a soon-to-be-announced soybean variety from SeCan.

“The pilot program is good news for our industry, and we are supportive of the process. We look forward to testing and evaluating the system,” said Chris Churko, CEO of FP Genetics and chair of the CPTA.

CSTA’s SVUA working group will bring together producers and industry for updates on the pilot program and act as a forum to provide advice and collaborate.

“It’s important to continue the conversation with producers. We look forward to offering new varieties to participating farmers and hearing their feedback,” added Dave Hansen, president and CEO of Canterra Seeds.

One of the confirmed participants in the working group is Kevin Runnalls of Canadian Seed Growers’ Association, who said, “This is an excellent way for our association to give feedback and help measure the success of the pilot program.”

I would say this is much more than a 'toe in the water' more like a 'dive into the deep end'.

Enforcement by ratification to end the CSGA and create the NSO utopia one stop single desk... the perfect solution for CPTA and CSTA,,, to down load all the costs on to farmers.

Anyway you slice it this is a back door seed tax. Eventually all seed varieties will come with this. Well this is how practically all business is done in canuckistan these days: enlist the government to help you steal. Government felt a front door seed tax too politically risky (end point royalty) as all consultation clearly stated no seed tax was needed, so endorsed a back door one instead. NICE

Whether it realizes it or not, SeCan, with the help of the Grain Growers of Canada and the Western Canadian Wheat Growers, is helping to turn total control over the seed supply to the private companies. They all need to be boycotted this spring.

                          Riley500,

I will pass this along to Secan.

                          My thoughts:

I have been a CSGA pedigreed seed grower for over 40 years. Out rouging seed fields since 1972.

I have worked tirelessly to retain the farmer right to control our seeds... CSTA/Seed companies apparently do not appreciate the farmers rights to control the seeds they grow[especially in western Canada]... nor do the Seed 'industry' accept the right of farmer seed growers to refuse to be bought off with their empty promises. The National Seed Organization [NSO] is a flawed attempt to steal the control of seed production away from western Canadian farmers by the Seed Industry.

Any industry can 'weaponize' just about any good intention... which SVUA trailing royalties enforced by contracts... particularly on AAFC/public bred varieties that have a large contribution from Canadian or provincial taxpayers and western Canadian farmers alike...
Are the most offensive breach of ethics... Limagrain/private bred varieties are different being outside the public plant breeding infrastructure.

Much to think about... we are at a crossroads on control of our seeds. Western Canada especially with cereals and pulses... are under attack.

Farmers need to join the Wet chiefs on the tracks, otherwise we are a distant voice in the dark.

Farm reps seen what the indigenous people have got for attention and money .....and the farm groups are all against protesting....

The farm groups sit around waiting to talk...to ignorant government Ag ministers....

Duh ....the reps say....what should we do Todd....Duh ....I don't know...wait for some vaseline. ...

Farmers have lost millions and are going to be taken to the cleaners with the seed tax....and they are not talking to the Ag ministers...
