We are getting the farm house (now sitting empty) fixed up just in case one of the family needs to self-isolate from the rest of us. I would think those in health care professions might be most vulnerable. Not too many cases in Regina so I think we will be ok.

We are looking for fertile chicken and turkey eggs. I have the incubator ready. It will be interesting for kids during long days locked up with “older humans”. LOL

Corona shouldn't be the impetus for a farm sickness plan. Farm sickness or injury even death can occur anytime. Contingencies and preparedness should always in place. On our place we have some contingencies but are a long ways from from what I consider preparedness, if there is such a thing.

What's the first step? Should it be written info on what to do if sudden death happens? Lists of potential emergency backup farm operators? Contacting creditors and suppliers re situation?

It's a big task, and one of those doors that when opened leads down an endless path.

We are self isolating like everyone else but my wife is in healthcare so everyday she goes to work to help sick people. These people can’t quit working the front lines or were all screwed. She will likely bring it home eventually. Very real and scary situation.

A thought from a friend....

Maybe not seed a crop at all . There is no law saying we have too . Hold off all payments one year . Save a lot of stress and anxiety. We have been told for years we are insignificant in world trade, and all we are is subsidized winners .
Let’s see where the chips fall with thousands of layoffs in Ag if that happens. Be a wake up call as to who is important in society and economy.

Could retired farmers set up a cash-loans account to access for younger farmers to pay their taxes?

Good for you. Me too. Have to find a roofer for the other house. Bad winds.

I’m operating on the premise that we’re all going to get it at some point but will try to delay that as much as possible. If someone does get it and is up for operating they will get a dedicated tractor and truck while keeping to themselves. Hopefully we can get through calving and seeding without any further issues.

Interesting to see others thoughts.

That is an interesting question, will our crop production be paid for or just "accepted". Countries' bank accounts will be less then empty and the borrowing maxxed including Canada.

We are still paying on Trudeau elder's debt. There is no scenario where a country pays down their debt completely. Even a complete restructure won't reset to zero IMO.
