    I am tupid.....

So today there was some announcement about temporary foreign workers required for farms....something is not right here...

500000 people filed for unemployment last week....

Call me tupid....but someone is a little mixed up...it may be me...

Those positions could be filled domestically?

The 500,000 want money not to work.

The temporary foreign workers realize they have to work to get money.

    First world problem.

Thanks ....I feel I am not mixed up...these people and politicians are scared to tell people there is work for those that are doing nothing but waiting to go to the post office everyday...

At least when farmers wait for government cheques they are actively trying do something. ...

This only changes when the pot runs empty!

Perhaps when people have spent months couped up in their houses this will change? There are plenty who think, "It'll just be a couple weeks." So no need to transition to different work as they'll be back at the desk in April. Just sit around and get paid! Hell, the bums do it, so why can't we all? Helicopter money is a beautiful thing!

Most of the temporary foreign workers are Niagara Peninsula vegetable pickers. If they were needed on the prairies you'd still be waiting. And just how the hell are they going to get here anyway? Swim over?

Exactly ...I was wondering about the logistics....and who will be paying for it all...

Seems it would be easier to social distance a few unemployed canadians to the fields....rather than bring in a few more from other countries...

FYI ——Neighbour here went to Jordan to pick up workers. Did you hear yesterday one of the New Covid cases came from Jordan? Not sure if the two are related, it may be a coincidence but maybe not.

Do keep in mind that EI is job insurance that you pay for as PREMIUM is deducted from your pay check for it. No different than if your house burns down. I will take my insurance payment in that case. So if you are laid off from a $40 to 50 dollar per hour job are you going to the first minimum wage job that comes up. I would bet none of you would so don't expect that of others. Your going to search for a job like the one you had for a while at least. In this case $40 per hour time 0.55 is $22 which beat minimum and like normal people I would do the same.

                    This is an inaccurate generalization.

I know numerous people - a multitude of people, in fact - that are in a bad way because one day they went to work and the next they were told to stay home.

I have family members in that dilemma.

Guess what - the rent bill, the electricity bill, the mortgage, the taxes still come due.

Lots of young people who just bought a house in the past year or 3 and they were already fairly tight for cash flow.

I know of several who just got a house rented and now, no work. They are resourceful and will likely be okay, but not all find their circumstances like that.

Well those same people didn't give a shit about farmers when harvest went off the tracks ....

I say ...tell those people to go borrow some more money...

I have zero phucking sympathy for people that buy an overpriced home with a job for a few months...

Buy a farm and lose a crop
....tough shit is the usual reply from the general public. ..

Apparently there are jobs available if they have to bring in foreign workers....

                        Again, you are generalizing.

There are many who would fall into the picture you paint but there are also others who will do whatever they can put their hand to in order to keep on going.

it's not as simple as it sounds.

I seldom disagree with your posts, but this time the evidence does not support it.

I think your painting far to many Canadians with a broad brush with a statement like that. Many people don't know all the circumstances farmers are facing today as they are ill informed. Many people who I meet are generally interested in farming and understand how important farmers are to the well being of Canada.

As for Canadian workers losing their jobs over night, all I can say is I feel sorry for the vast majority of them. No one seen or understood what the impact covid-19 would have, other than the few USA politicians who got the news early on the severity of covid-19 and unloaded all the their shares.

Empathy is needed by all Canadians right now in every sector!

Not sure about Ontario, but my mexican worker gets about $58k for 8 months work. Don't assume they are all minimum wage jobs.

I also am not expecting someone to move from Ontario and maintain two places rather than collect EI. But someone in my town who has a 14 mile commute. Why not?
