Macdon, when you talk about young people losing their drive, immediately the situation in Alberta comes to mind. How can the young be mentally healthy? They have been robbed and brutalized by despotic eastern thugs. They are living a nightmare. Just saying sorry to all of those who have gone all in and got hammered by a “nut houseâ€.

Your absolutely correct MD. Now that the country is in depression, so many will never see an opportunity to realize their potential like was common a generation ago. Every one is proud of being able to live like a hermit. Unfortunately that is not a business incubator. Man was created as a social being and we need each other. If the economy is to grow in the future we need to interact to grow new business ventures which will be sorely needed in the future. Think about contacts that informed you of an opportunity in the past. These are invaluable. As far as overwhelming the health care system, I am hearing reports of reports of shut down in lots of parts of the health care system because people are not coming in to routine procedures for fear of getting covid. There is a bit of retooling needed of course. Maybe having more private health care options would allow the system to be more responsive in the future. AB has only 21 or so hospitalized so doesn't seem overwhelming to me.

Keep in mind that Coronavirus did not cause the economic crisis. This is basically a debt bubble which has now burst. Coronavirus was just the pin. Efforts to contain the debt bubble that blew up in the U.S. in 2008 resulted in the creation of a worldwide debt bubble which has now burst, and now includes many levels of government.
Thanks to zero percent interest rates, not only governments but private businesses went heavily into debt. Most businesses are producing goods at very slim margins. Now those margins are negative for many. A couple of weeks of shut down and free cash flow is all used up. A month of this and you are in a big hole that you might not get out of. Many businesses will simply close for good.
We are likely looking at an L shaped economic recovery.
Also consider how many people are going to die when your monopoly health care provider (your province) goes bankrupt.
This is not over by a long shot, even when the curve flattens. We need to start thinking about what happens next. Things just won't go back to normal in the blink of an eye.

New coronavirus
Federal Council recommendation
Stay at home, particularly if you are over the age of 65 or ill; unless you have to go to work and are unable to work from home; unless you have to go to the doctor’s or to the pharmacy; unless you have to go shopping or help someone.
The Federal Council and Switzerland are counting on you!
New Coronavirus: Evaluation of anonymised data on gatherings
27.3.20 - On 21 March, the Federal Council prohibited gatherings of more than five people in public spaces. We with the help of Swisscom’s analyses and graphics we are assessing whether this measure is being respected. We do not receive any location data; all data is anonymised and aggregated. It is not possible to make inferences about specific individuals.
Current situation in Switzerland
3.4.2020, 8 am, cases confirmed in Switzerland:
No. of people tested positive (for coronavirus): 19,303
Deaths: 484 people
The figures published here are based on notifications received until early morning. They generally correspond to the date on which the sample was taken by the doctor. The figures contained in the report and in the Excel table may therefore differ from those communicated by the cantons.

My son finished his Masters in Chemical Engineering a couple years ago, did his coop in Germany and with CoSyn here in Canada. Syncrude immediately hired him for research where his first project was to remove Chlorine from sand water that makes HydroChloric acid and eats everything out costing millionsssss in damage a year. Takes the company jet to Fort Mac and home again, he's 27.
His wife, graduated 4 years ago with Mech Eng, is a maintenance engineer for Suncor in charge of a huge compressor station.
Could go thru the list of their friends with similar stories. So don't assume they are all in that state. The ones who have worked hard on the right education and don't have face piercings and pink hair are doing ok. Who knows what the future brings, but its the same for everyone.
Maybe having people face real problems and risk in their lives will help them from making up ones that don't exist like the anti-vax movement, or GMO is bad, or diet drinks are killing us. It might help them remember where their food comes from, just how important the truckers are, that we aren't invincible, and that technology can't save every problem.
Farmers are no better, short rotations are the perfect breeding ground for the next crop disease pandemic - we know the potential for problems, but won't change till its too late. Technology will save us, right?

These powder puffs need a wake up call that others have had all our lives. Spoiled brats living high in the hog overpaid relative to the frontline workers that are obviously so underpaid and valued and saving all our asses. Shit happens if you have it together you ll find a way. Why the hell aren t they buying sheep? Lol

I had a conversation a week or so ago with someone much smarter than myself on issues like Covid-19. My first question was does all this isolation and social distancing just delay the inevitable infection or exposure to this virus? Her response was yes that was correct to an extent. The goal of government is to reduce the level of initial infections so that the health system isn't overwhelmed and to give medical experts time to develope a treatment protocol or a vaccine. Then I asked what percentage of the population would have to be exposed before we were theoretically safe. She said to create what is known as herd immunity you would need close to 70% of the population exposed to the virus. Think about that, we have had what 1 or 2 percent exposed now, long road to herd immunity.

The economy was a fictional story that was unsustainable. Everybody borrowed to the max, no one facing reality, people spend 3x what they make....
This may very well be the best thing to happen to the economy - reality. Not the human life lost - but the economy needed a serious kick in the a$$.
