    Handouts all around

Mighty quiet on here regarding that the Federal government of Canada is investing $1.7 billion to clean up orphan wells in the west. Alberta alone has 265,000 orphan wells.

So the oil companies paid next to nothing in royalties, pumped out the oil and profits and left the mess behind, and now the tax payers can pickup the bill for clean up.

Not to mention I'm sure the oil companies will also receive some type of Federal bail out money being that oil is below $20.00 a barrel.

Do any of you have orphan wells on your farm land? Must be nice driving equipment around during seeding, spraying and harvesting. Hopefully some of these wells can be taken off your land and some farmers will get some benefit out of it

Who exactly gets the money to do this? SNC?

There are companies who specialize in oilfield cleanup. Small to medium sized. Cleanups done at a reasonable cost. Could be a good shot in the arm for a lot of towns who relied on the patch for income. I hope it stays with the companies in place.

This likely a fairly worthwhile project if the government has to come up with a make work project. Governments have gotten a lot of revenue out of the energy industry over the years and it is nice if the government spends money that some some comes back to the west where it came from in the first place. As in not all spent in quebec. Don't know why lefttards always say that oil companies pay little in royalties, fact is a lot of money has been paid over the years as royalties. The oil sands don't contribute much royalties, but that is expensive oil to produce so it has been managed as a way to create high paying jobs. From those, a lot of tax revenue is produced.

I am a little perplexed Forage, as is quite often pointed out Canada's equalization program was funded historically by higher personal and corporate tax revenues in Alberta created to a great extent by the resource industry. There is certainly no doubt laws in relation to well reclamation left a lot to be desired but I disagree on the royalty front due to the fact that coastal access is a long way away from production increasing shipping costs. So Forage have to be honest I grow very tired of people with an attitude like yours. The oil industry isn't perfect but in my opinion has certainly contributed in a positive way to Canada.

the money that the oil patch pumped into the economies of Ab., Sk., Mb., & quebec is becoming painfully obvious
if the feds wouldn't of been so greedy , taking all the money for the crybabies , alberta could of done it themselves

Most of the oil companies canned all of the well clean ups budgets a year ago tryn to save money. I don’t think too many people want a job cleaning up old leases. Some slimy companies will do good but the average worker won’t. After seeing how the govt spends money on cleaning up mines, they won’t have that 1.7 billion doled out in my lifetime. They will spend alittle amount and have huge cost over run then they will study what went wrong.

You are right personal taxes were high because wages were high, but no one was looking after the rest of albertans that was not collecting oil wages $1500/day plus signing bonuses, $40/hr operators, there was an oportunity lost, for albertans but some did very well. Equiptment paid for in 2 yrs with exorbitant rates ,bid by invitation only AKA buddy system .
No one wants to say any thing because they adored the corrupt, inept gov of the last 40 yrs .
The royalties paid to the gov wont start to pay for the cleanup costs. I cant say how much the gov collected in income tax from those oil workers i am sure it was lots and look at all the land bought and paid for to get out of taxes. Now they have more toys than they can afford and want the rest of us to bail them out.
I think they should go back over the yrs and send the bill to all the politicans that prospered immensely on the resource sector.

Gee forgie, have you forgotten the previous leftist Notley government appointed their own committee to investigate Alberta's royalty structure, and the NDPers found that royalties were fair to oil companies and the Government of Alberta and it's citizens. No adjustments were needed, no adjustments were made.
