Oh boy, what fun we're having slip-sliding away in the mud.
Harvest from fall of 2019 is all but completed in our area or guys just said piss on it and burnt it. Lots of horror stories of combines that really took it hard this spring and lots that are in the shop getting repaired.
North of us where the big snow and hail event was last fall are still just waiting to get going. Fields are saturated and not much for seeding is getting done. Lots trying to dry out the land with harrows or any other means.
South of the valley is even slow for seeding this year. The ground is cold and lots got burnt seeding real early last year.
We got going on Monday and as of tonight will hit the 13% mark completed. One rain event yesterday that shut us down.
We were able to go and clean up a few fields that were spring harvested. Rutts and harrow and burn.
It looks like a few more guys have added lentils to the rotation and peas are going in same as usual in our area. Yes, the 8-year rule is working and most are following that guideline.
So for our area the pulse seeding will be close to completed and guys are moving on to wheat and some barley. Zero canola seeded but that will change next week.
Rain event on way for Monday and that could delay the seeding process again. the week before May long is optimal seeding for our area. With this spring being so cold at night and trees have zero leaves and rain every couple days it could be a challenge to finish in May. Yea I'm looking at may slip by and wondering whats going on. I need 16 days to finish with no major break downs or delays. Yes, the latest we have seeded was June 11th and it did turn out good. But mostly over the years, June 5 th is our last day. So that would put us on May 29th. Let's see what mother nature will throw at us.
Again I think Lentil and pea acres are going up. Durum is going in again for our area an old staple years ago. HRS will be down a bit. Barley will be up as guys go for Malt. Canola will be down a bit and flax will be up up up.
So be safe and have fun seeding as all the City folk head out to the lake and relax. Oh, wait that is different this year. Just be safe.
