When concentrated urban areas rule the rest of the country’s people it leaves vast inequalities.... look at Canada right now . A relatively small area concentrated in southern Quebec and southern Ontario are basically running the whole show with little regard for the rest of the “land” . Add that to a PM that refuses to open Parliament for the next 4-5 months and we have a near dictatorship, not a democracy that supposed to be . An electoral college helps even out the issues for the land and people .

I agree with your point, I don't really want Nunavat , NWT and Northern Quebec having control over our entire country because of their land area, anymore than I want the current arrangement.

But, there has to be some recognition of contribution to GDP. Not recycling money in the service economy, but actual wealth creation, exportable products or services, when deciding how to make political regions. Otherwise it becomes the takers making decisions on behalf of the makers. Population doesn't necessarily correlate with actual economic contribution. Lots of people in a city going to Tim Hortons and hair salons doesn't have the same net effect on the countries bottom line a a handful of people mining potash or growing grain, or drilling for oil, or fabricating the tools for the above, etc. Even if they do turn over the same amount of money in the same time.

I wouldn't be so sure that the world will be a different place. Read some of Peter Zeihan's work. Most of what Trump has done was inevitable, regardless of party or leader, and the isolationist trend is likely to only accelerate. Just go back and check the Democrats foreign policies from the previous election.

It might be more palatable and predictable under a civilized leader, and diplomacy and information dissemination might go back to their more traditional avenues, as opposed to tweets, but I doubt the contents will be any different.

Personally, I'm not losing any sleep over the outcome. For one thing, we have much much bigger problems to solve here at home, before we need to concern ourselves with the idiosyncrasies of most successful nation ever. A democratic win might just be good for western Canada. More Canadians (who tend to be much further left than even the Democrats) would be inclined to consider joining the US under a democrat than a Republican, especially this Republican.
