Kenney says Alberta will hold referendum on equalization in 2021

Committed, and rest of the recommendations released. Looks like an APP is seriously being considered.

Wonder if skippy will take notice now.

It also cautioned against the province threatening to separate from Canada , saying it would not be a constructive negotiating strategy.
It is the only negotiating strategy. Why would the rest of Canada agree to renegotiating equalization to their great detriment, if they have nothing to lose?
Without the threat of separation, the rest of the negotiations are toothless, don't even bother with the referendum. The only way renegotiating our position is going to be successful is if every demand is presented as an ultimatum, accept the demand, or we separate.

Alberta to hold referendum on equalization payments, Premier Kenney says

"University of Calgary economist Trevor Tombe said the Alberta government’s fiscal challenges have nothing to do with equalization but rather the fact that the province has low taxes and high spending. He said reforming equalization would not change that.

“There does not exist any sensible change that would result in Alberta receiving a dime from equalization, at least right now or in the foreseeable future,” he said.

“Why equalization is the focus of so many Albertans is a really deep puzzle, because it’s a program designed to pay to lower-income provinces. And Alberta is and has been for quite some time the richest province by a very wide margin.”

Critics have pointed out that the current equalization formula, which measures a province’s capacity to raise revenue and uses that to determine equalization payments, was last updated when Mr. Kenney was in cabinet in then-prime minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government."

The Alberta Conservative way. Low taxes and high spending! LOL

Lets stop spreading the myth that Alberta Conservatives have been good fiscal managers.

It has been the opposite in Alberta. Party while the oil boom is on and then blame Ottawa when the inevitable bust happens!

Prior to Covid last year if Alberta had a tax system like "socialist" Saskatchewan they would have had a $14 Billion dollar surplus.

Lets get the mud slinging going!

        A5 you start! hahaha

Good one the SF. Avoid the facts identified by Toombes that Alberta has a pile of unused fiscal capacity and could have raised raise a lot of revenue but prefers to give tax breaks to the richest Albertans and oil company friends and then cries wolf when the oil industry struggles with low prices.

lol this is just too funny! Kenney is planning on spending money on a non binding provincial referendum of the current federal equalization program which was last renegotiated when he was a federal cabinet minister. I doubt there is a single Alberta who will not vote that the program Kenney was part of creating is screwed up yet and Kenney needs a vote to find that out?

And to listen to the law an order Cons on this forum attack the defund police movement in the US at the same time calling for defunding the RCMP in Alberta. They must not like that the feds pay 1/3 of the cost of policing in Alberta and would sooner Alberta businesses and residents pay an additional 120 million more a year for policing that the feds currently subsidize. Not including the costs of creating the needed training facilities and the costs of instructing an APP force.

Seriously sheeple, do any of you think?

Unfortunately the average Albertan doesn’t realize that on a per capita basis our government is among the highest spenders in Canada and has among the lowest rates of taxation. While there is no doubt that Albertan’s have payed since the 1960’s close to $600 billion more in federal taxes than they have received in federal programming it is difficult to see how the federal government would agree to significantly alter what Alberta receives. As pointed out when Stephen Harper was Prime Minister it was politically impossible to make significant changes. It is also obvious that Alberta’s lower tax rates are one factor that attracts young people to Alberta to work and live. A referendum on equalization is a waste of time in my opinion, one on separation makes more sense but is not winnable in my opinion. It is possible the referendum on equalization is a stepping stone in that direction.

Alberta’s referendum is like a chihuahua chasing a Greyhound bus-just yipping at the big tires. The big tires are in the east and they don’t give a hoot.

Even UCP needs Canada seeing as they are the only Alberta political party that is using CERB funding from Ottawa to keep their overpaid political staffers on the payroll during Covid.
