    Scorching canola

Better to swath a little green or wait till ripe? Or **** it just straight cut?

Some of the big guys who usually straight cut want it down and off. Swathing pod shatter varieties.

The chemical is so uncertain. I see guys who used some preharvest on wheat almost 2 weeks ago and its still not ready. We got the swather out.

Swathing Green and this heat and dry is a guarantee disaster. The others aren’t much better but possibly better.
      Ours is fried bad.

Preharvest can't KILL wheat with no leaves, burnt in the heat, plant is SHUT down. Stupid stressed weeds might not DIE either.
Swathing now with 60-80% black seeds in 7565, pods shrunk tight to seeds, dry down will make small seeds, less bu/Acre. Huge swaths but volume is uncertain.

My opinion.... If you are intending to swath non-straight cut varieties, and things are changing, and depending on how many acres you have to cover..... You might want to get at it. I think the "balance" is going to "tip" fast. There were times when things got ahead of us and there was no dew for night swathing to help prevent shattering.

We have started. Would I like to have seen more color change...yes. But I think it will turn fast.

Over ripe canola swaths are "very fluffy".... wind prone. If its shatter resistant...let it stand??????

          Just ANOTHER management decision.....

Its just so easy , right furrow?

Eidt.in.... Remember we are.dry, wet areas might " hang on" longer.

Not much heat left in most forecasts, no?

Swathing this fluffy dry swath seems dangerous to me. There is no weight to hold it down in a wind. Change in weather Is often accompanied by wind. Either way, the heat is the craps.

Leave it stand as long as you dare then swath between 2am and 11am.

Swathed every acre. Half in the bin. The other half in the next week.

Different areas different problems. Waiting for the colour to change more and worried about cold crap weekend. Wheat about hard dough, oats a couple days off. Barley last seeded quite flat and needs swathed when ready. We are wet here and I’ll give the canola till Friday before I might consider cutting. Aside from a few exceptions most around here won’t fire up till mid September. Lots of fall jobs getting done already cause it looks like this could go into the 10th inning again.

Robert,,, much the same here, except we didn't seem to ever be "a little on the green side"
We had 3 days in a row at 36-37'C, and it went from green to past ideal swathing stage. 33-35'C the week before those 3 days, 33-35'C for the week after, and about the same this week, then it looks like it might get cooler here after that. But by then, I think she'll be too brittle to swath, even with dew on it(which we haven't had for a month)No body was going to swath in that heat, although I did plan to swath this year(even with planting a Dekalb straight cut variety 7565) Seeds are nice and black as standing usually are,,, but the seeds are clearly smaller, maybe 2/3rds the normal size. Defiantly affect bus. volume, we'll just have to see where bus weight ends up. Looks like we'll be doing it all straight, weeds mostly dyeing off, except for the odd kochia patch. We need 10-14 days at least before we can cut it strght, 20 days if it does turn cooler. I'm nervous as heck, as that a long time to go without a wind storm, and '65 ain't the best for tolerating wind, especially this year, the pods and stems seem very brittle.

According to wiseguy, according to Sask Crop Insurance all canola runs 50 booshals to da ache-her.

Those new varieties are weather proof.

No worries here about heat. Still waiting for some black seed to show up and the big worry will be frost. NE wind tonight should almost have a wind chill warning.

Like others have said i would let it get black seed close to the top and then swath at night. Gets tricky if you have lots of field to do and one break down has you way behind.
