    Barley

    Malt.......
    Feed......

You could have booked feed for next spring as high as $5.80 picked up locally, has dropped back over the last few weeks. One market email I got said if there is any indication China is gonna pull out of the market it will instantly drop $1.50/bu.

I do still have a bunch to sell but am thinking it's kinda foolish not to have it sold at those prices.

If only you could steady those prices from year to year.

Something is going to have to give, either beef prices up, or feed grain prices down. At the current profitability ratios, there won't be a cow left to feed soon. On a per acre basis "here", cattle just don't work, unless the land is all paid for, and you ignore all opportunity costs.

That said, barley was disappointing this year according to everyone I've talked to in this area.
I'll still seed feed wheat vs barley. Hail tolerant, drown out tolerant, drought tolerant, falling flat tolerant. And I can push it to much higher yields.

IF I ever had to mess with barley again it would be feed.
Hopefully i never have to. Lowest margin here.

Barley doesn’t yield much more than wheat on most of my land. I do rent some farther away land the reverse is seen. I like barley for what it does for the soil. It’s earlier too so I can get going sooner. To boot you have good fall stubble grazing.

Barley grossed and netted the best for us this year. Feed only. Actually buying discounted tough feed oats and selling our good barley here. My cows can turn anything into moo poo.............. the cheaper the better. Just don’t tell them I said that😉

High yielding malt varieties let's you do either market.
Both are higher than good wheat for us.
