Gas in diesel ehgine

Other day took slip tank to get a bit o diesel for the chore tractor. Told her put 100 litres of diesel in slip tank, fill truck with gas. Brought it home put some in tractor. Tractor ran and fed a couple bales. Tractor died when I went to go again. Bled lines, tried everything, no gas smell. But today as I worked on it, cracked a line, smelled GAS. Ran to the slip tank, yup, GAS.

So I assume the coop has insurance or such. Anyone have this happen to them? Ie what if engine is damaged?

Talk to them immediately, give them the heads up? Or find the damage and go from there?

Just hoping not much damaged.

Yeah I’m draining the tank and lines and am gunna get some diesel to try and get her running and see if anything is amiss to start with. Gas hard on injection pump etc.

Worst is I gotta get bales out to the sheep. Kind of need that tractor...

My dad put gas a couple of times in a David Brown we had, never seemed to have the same amount of power it originally had. Eventually needed engine work.

Were you thinking one thing and said another to the gas pump operator?

Not sure you have a leg to stand on regarding Co-op insurance, so many things could have happen after you left the service station. How do they know if you didn't screw up at the farm?

I think you might be screwed with getting help from gas station (receipt shows you left ‘accepting’ the gas purchase). Not sure on the engine damage.

Well I got her drained out and lines cleared and fresh diesel in. So far so good. Talked to gm. They certainly WILL stand behind me if I have issues. They will cover me. I always state, diesel in tank, gas in truck. I know I stated that. “Who the #$&@ hauls gas in slip tanks?” said the gm to me. Lol

So I guess I was thinking the worst, expecting the worst, and maybe got ahead of myself. We’ll see what happens in the next hundred hours.

Talked to a gm friend of mine in a far away town to get his perspective. Being local, knowing the service centre manager, and having receipts and knowing dates and times etc., it’s pretty easy for them to cough it up. If I was a non local, and had no reputation with the place, he said it would be harder, though not impossible to rectify. They carry piles of insurance he said. For just this kind of thing.

Me? I’m just thankful it appears no immediate damage was done, and I can feed my sheep on schedule without trying to find a rental or something.

Years ago Esso delivered bulk fuel and put gas in our diesel tank. One newer diesel truck came to a stop like your tractor. After changing the fuel, we got it going again. Shortly after, the fuel pump and injectors needed to be replaced as it had low power and smoked. Esso paid for all the repairs-mind you, the chain of custody of the fuel was pretty obvious in our case-still was gas in the clearly labeled bulk diesel tank.
I would notify Co-op right away, show them the slip tank etc. They will be inclined to work with you I would guess.

A small amount of gas in diesel doesn’t seem to do damage. I used to have a rabbit vw diesel and the owners manual recommended in freezing weather to add 10% gas to summer diesel if winter is not available.

With today’s low sulphur diesel,the lubricity is a lot lower than diesel from years ago. I wonder if this would be a wise practice now. I found out years ago that a lubricity additive is needed.

Definately let the coop know whats happening. Gas in a new diesel truck will cost 10 grand minimum if it gets started. You are doing them a favor by smartening the guy up before its a wreck.

I for one haul gas in slip tank ever sense others helped me use gas from bulk tank . 500 litres for quads grain truck pickup when not going to town,Havent had a problem with theft sense started using slip tank.
Gas theft that is, ive had lots of other stuff go missing.

Yeah I have a card lock card already. The fill in question was about location and the rush I was n. Trying to limit my stops. What are the odds?
