    Current new crop prices?

Should a guy start booking some new crop production even though its bone dry ....

    11 dollar canola
    7.75 durum
    13 dollar flax
    7.50 peas

Haven't seen lentil or wheat bids for new crop from the local..

But should a farmer price some new crop as a start..

I think this would qualify as a marketing post???

    Any ideas about upside /downside???

Maybe 10,15,20% its dry now but by May 1st we could be swimming. My old school marketing bites me in the ass a few times. Only have bought back 2 contracts in 40 years because of weather(one was wet year).Lots of grain was presold here in this area in Jan for a lot less last year. If price pencils in good for you in good year you did your part and the rest is up to mother nature. Did i mention my old school marketing bites me in the Oh wait yes i did.

Tough call when it’s dry , prices are finally decent though for next fall .
Lots can happen before seeding , let alone next fall

Two crops for us since most of Saskatchewan is going on the feed barley train.

          Half Canola
          Half Wheat.

**** peas and **** Barley and oats.

            I won't be pricing a 1cwad...might price a 3cwad and look for premiums...I have been caught pricing what i thought was a 1cwad on August 15 and by august 20 it was a 5cwad....

In SE Sask, we're probably the driest we've been in 10 years. I will be very nervous about pricing much on a delivery contract, especially one you can't reposition on paper, or doesn't have an Act of God clause.

Won't this be a prime time of our commodity groups(that are supposed to represent the growers) to push for Act of God clauses in all contracts, including wheats? also, how about locked-in differentials, or protein payment levels.

I think a big consideration would be, how does South America end up? If they end up with a crappy small crop, we could still see good prices in N America(USD dropping won't hurt either)
Also if Europe stays dry, good prices will hang on. I think it's more about what happens in S.A. and Europe than if it rains in May, in Western Canada. JustMyThoughts

My answer on this is fairly short, in my opinion there is still room for prices to move up a bit more for fall. When I see Cargill crush at Camrose going to $14 canola for March already that makes me believe canola will be in short supply in the spring. I did book a few loads of feed barley off combine for $5.25, probably should have booked more but anytime I pre book barley I get poorer yields so a bit superstitious lol.
