Would the world be a better place

Philosophical Xmas discussion, is the world better or worse because of social media/internet.

The cut and paste brigade, the I saw it on the internet must be true believers.

Wouldn’t be typing this thread without it.

I’m sure consensus will be it’s better.

    Tis good Tis bad

I had to think about that for a bit.
    Quality of life certainly.
    Education, health care, productivity.
    Media?
If we were to say that Zuckerberg has the same control as Hearst once had then no.
But the power to learn and share has never been this high. The responsibility of that power now lies with the individual more than ever before.
The Guttenberg press in everyone's hands. Question is, are we up to the challenge?

Can you imagine having a world with just main stream media ? Especially now
Would be just like state owned media like North Korea and China ..... all slanted heavily to the political flavour of the day .

The world is the world. No better, no worse.

As with any tool, the internet and social media can be used for good jobs. It can also be a half assed, duct tapped handle, pinch your fingers and strip a bolt kind of tool. It’s all how it’s used.

Human nature is the deciding factor.

When it comes to knowledge though, human nature is to learn and believe the first thing and to staunchly defend it. It doesn’t matter what kind of knowledge and information the internet and social media open up for us, when we hunt for information we will go with the first path we find. It is a rare individual that will continuously expand on their learning to the point that an opinion can change. What they continue to learn is how to back up their already established views.

I enjoy social media, it has great benefits. I really enjoy the internet, it has opened the world to be wider than it ever had a chance of being while I was growing up. But I am realistic about it. I am cautious about click bait. I am cautious about misleading titles. I am cautious about only searching for reaffirming information for my current knowledge.

The internet is a wonderful tool for connecting and expanding but if someone is just going to use it to reaffirm what they already know, they might as well just talk to themselves in a mirror.

From an information and learning perspective it's great, some commerce application is great, some questionable.

Socially it's a disaster. Communication is so much more than words can convey. Peoples feelings, self esteem etc are often hurt by interpreting things wrong through typing. With the anonymity of social media as seen on Agriville most choose to say things they never would think of in person. How many families sit at the dinner table all looking at their phones instead of talking and asking about the others' day. how many parents shove a iPad on the toddler as a babysitter. Young people growing up without the ability to make small talk or conversation. Which leads to the next issue of dating and procreation- not sure swiping left or right for a quick screw is the way to find a lifelong mate. (but yes I may be a bit jealous that it wasnt that easy when I was on the prowl). As easy as it's made to contact others with all the device options these days, I feel that the need to visit the neighbours or extended family has disappeared and we have become more out of touch. Not sure it can be reversed, I am as guilty as the next guy, but I do think about it and try to put the tech down and play and talk with the family as much as I can.

YouTube is good when you need to fix something or build something. Lots of help on Twitter if you are trying to fix something and you ask for help.
If you own a GMC vehicle you almost need a code reader and google to figure out why that stupid check engine light is on!

Thank god I am past the dating stage because it would drive me nuts doing the online thing.

But some people getting back to basics. Getting dogs and meeting up in the dog parks are big now.

Social media has become too toxic because its been taken over by the radical left mostly. The MSM, big tech and anyone with an agenda to drive home no matter how foolish or wrong they are, they are back again the very next day pushing it. Programming.

It can be great for researching very neutral topics, like taxes or finance etc. Its toxic for anything that has a political tinge to it and those topics are increasing exponentially. On other topics the censorship is nothing short of Nazi germany.

I certainly echo the beneficial aspect as far as using you tube in relation to repairs, there are certainly times this has come in handy.

Certainly a negative as far as basic socializing, really should be a tub at the door everyone puts their phones in would certainly improve social gatherings and I am as guilty as everyone else.

The BIG negative is it has made is so much easier for those who hold extreme views to extend their reach and this has certainly denigrated our society as a whole!
