Manitoba makes deal to buy Canadian-made COVID-19 vaccine

Do any provinces charge for the flu vaccine? Probably not because it is good public policy to make sure cost is not a barrier to reducing the spread of seasonal flu. It will be the same for covid.

Covid vaccines will be required every year. There will be multiple ways to get the vaccine in the future using doctors, clinics and pharmacies.

So what if the rich get early access? They drive nicer cars than I do, but that has no impact on my ability to purchase a Chevy.

Every day countless Canadians purchase inexpensive, widely available pharmaceuticals, simply because a price system is allowed to exist for these items. They are not sold via auction; rich people pay the same as anyone else.

Since the rich are allegedly about 1% of the population, that would only hold up the line for a few days at most.

Any other system condemns people to a life as Soviet peasants.

Isn't this the system we have now? Afterall, 3/4ths of the covid vaccinations that have been administered to date have gone to just 10 countries. 130 countries have not yet administered a single vaccine (as of Feb 4th)

Those 10 countries: US, UK, some EU nations, Israel, China, and Russia are among the richest nations, they had pre ordered more vaccines than they need, and they have existing vaccine manufacturing facilities.

This is why they are rich and powerful. It's a feature of a rational economic system, not a bug. So of course these nations will be able to acquire vaccines much faster than nations mired in economic systems which facilitate central planning, corruption and decay.

Unfortunately the present Canadian government seems hell bent on instituting a corrupt, decaying economic model. Hence our pathetic vaccine rollout.

When I was reading these stories, I started to ask an obvious question: if facilities already exist in Manitoba for the production of vaccines, why haven't they already started producing them?

The answer: under the auspices of the Canada Health Act, it's undoubtedly illegal for anyone to offer a vaccine for sale privately. Thus, no vaccine producer is going to start up production of a vaccine without first having a contract with someone to pay for it.

Since sales to private citizens and/or for-profit vendors is out of the question, that leaves only one alternative: your company sits and waits until some government agency takes notice of you, enters into a lengthy period of negotiation and finally signs a contract. It doesn't matter if your product can meet an urgent consumer demand; the main criteria is meeting whatever budget a government authority has deemed adequate.
