I got a new standby last year to replace our older 5 KW Winco genset, barely big enough to run the bare essentials - water pump, furnace, freezers, etc. No spare capacity for more than an electric tea kettle.
The new one, a 8.75 KW, has electric start. Love it.
This one will allow one stove top burner if needed, in addition to the usual essentials as above. Still not more than big enough, but better.
I looked it up - a stove top with 4 burners will use up to 5 or 6 KW. The oven will use another 5 KW.
A newer fridge will run on next to nothing. There's a ton of info online to tell you what your usage requirement is. Or if you're lucky like me, you have a couple of sons in the electrical business and they can tell you these things off the top of their head...
We have the generator plug and transfer switch on the pole. Really nifty and a must for safety reasons.
Don't be jimmy rigging a plug in up without a transfer switch or you will end up electrocuting one of those hero linesmen out getting your power back on in a windstorm.
I'm thinking of a 25 KW genset for the rare event when we might have crop in the bins that need aeration. Kinda pricey, but what's a bin of crop worth?
Conversion factor for hp to w: 1 hp(E) = 746 W
Not sure how soft start motors affect the draw.
