Thanks to a little bit of an inflationary mini boom, wood prices have been getting a little bit of attention these days. So now there is another group that wants to try strawboard again this time by Trochu AB. How many dollars are tax payers going to lose on this one? Would be nice if the reporter from AB Express would have asked that question. If Dupont could not make the Elie MB plant fly 20 yrs ago, why do people think it will go this time? Why doesn't somebody try to get Elie going again. Most of these things are just exercises in getting government grant money which the dumbest of the dumb, the canuckistanian snivel disservice always get taken. Anyways wish them luck but please let there be no government money in this.

Don't think the good folks at Elie want any more straw board plants. Took a few years to get the rat problem under control. Neighbor bought some unused bales ,not the best deal .

Was there confirmed rats at Elie?
I only ask because because a few years back I would work winters a a local Alfalfa Dehy plant. There acres got so high they would end up baling lots of suncure that they could processed in during the winter. With only an old tub grinder they soon got behind and thousand of bales got piled up for a number of years. My job was running the loader feeding bales into the tub grinder.
Ever time I went to town I heard crazy stories about all the rat that were in them old bales!
All winter 24 hours a day we would pull then old bale piles apart to run through the grinder and never saw one single rat!

They’ve done plenty of scouting here asking farmers if they would supply the amount of straw they need.
Originally the plant was going to be at Stettler but trucking logistics didn’t work because of the highway through town. So they moved down here. Haven’t heard of money exchanging hands yet but they’ve got their eye on 3 quarters between Trochu and Threehills.
Don’t know that there would be higher chances of rats unless they started bringing in straw from those of you that are infested....
Most rat sightings seem to be traced back to Muskrats.

Just going on the straw I spread for neighbor who bought old bales from plant when it closed. Alberta rat free so not a problem go for it. It could bring more $ for guys with extra straw but I think the best thing to make boards is still trees !

Why monkey with OSB, particle board, straw board when plywood is superior and cost competitive?
